Chemical and environmental engineering

Chemical and environmental engineering at RMIT combines engineering science, design and practice with a focus on sustainability.

In the coming years, humanity is facing local and global environmental and sustainability challenges.

They impact all spheres of human activity and interest such as food, water, natural resource usage and conversion, healthcare and energy.

Chemical and environmental engineering at RMIT combines engineering science, process technologies, design and practice with a focus on sustainability to assess and solve environmental challenges.

They contribute to development of processes and products in a sustainable manner, and protection and remediation of the environment to ensure safety and well-being as desirable outcomes for society.

Equipped with excellent infrastructure and supported by dedicated and highly accomplished staff, our programs are strongly linked with industry partners in the fields of energy, resource recovery, environment, water, and food. Industry links provide a unique environment for learning about and solving real-world problems.

Join us in our exciting journey and contribute to society through chemical and environmental engineering.

What is chemical and environmental engineering?

Chemical and environmental engineers apply engineering concepts and technical skills to improve industrial processes and solve environmental challenges.

Chemical engineering involves designing and developing processes that convert raw materials into useful, everyday products like pharmaceuticals, fuel, plastics and food. Chemical engineers find ways to make process industries work more efficiently and minimise their environmental impact by using less energy and producing less waste.

Environmental engineers protect, restore and create engineered and natural systems that are socially, environmentally and economically sustainable. They assess environmental impact of human activity, find ways to minimise water, land and air pollution, and develop remediation methods to reduce environmental degradation.

Environmental Engineering at RMIT

Our courses

RMIT chemical and environmental engineering deliver sustainable solutions through engineering processes.

Research

Our multidisciplinary research aims at developing innovative technological solutions for contemporary problems relating to sustainable processing, industry, environment, resources and healthcare.

Beyond the classroom

China Environmental Challenges Study Tour

China Environmental Challenges Study Tour

Each year a group of RMIT environmental engineering and science students undertake an intensive two-week study tour through China.
Humanitarian engineering

Humanitarian engineering

Our students have to opportunity to use their skills to help remote communities and developing countries via capstone projects, the Humanitarian Experiential Learning Project or the Engineers Without Borders Challenge.
