PhD Scholarship in Metaverse and Artificial Intelligence for Next Generation Educational Technology Platforms

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a PhD candidate to explore the application of Metaverse and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop a framework for an educational technology platform and training programs that are challenging to offer in real-world setting.

The Metaverse is considered the third wave of the Internet revolution, able to support persistent interconnected online 3D virtual environments (3DVE) and promising to bring new levels of social connection and collaboration in education. According to (Jagannathan, 2022) of the World Bank’s Open Learning Campus, it is time to reimagine the future of Learning with Metaverse. Metaverse based education has the potential to radically transform the teaching and learning landscape. It’s power, though rudimentary is already realised with the use of VR, AR, XR, and MR in existing educational platforms.  We aim to use the features and functionalities of Metaverse supported by Artificial Intelligence to develop a framework for an educational technology platform and training programs that are challenging to offer in real-world setting.  The framework will be significant contribution towards providing a cheaper, easier, and safer STEM education, rather than risking training in real-life scenarios. It will contribute towards SDG 4, 8, and 11. Our expected outcomes would be a white paper with a framework and a prototype that can be used as a guideline for the next generation educational technology platforms based on metaverse and artificial intelligence.

A next generation educational technology platform based on metaverse, and artificial intelligence will contribute to “Digitally Enabled Education” and digital transformation. In addition to the school’s research theme and cluster, this research aligns with sustainable development (efficient, less use of resources and student mobility), digital transformation of education, and smart cities (wired and smart campuses).

A next generation educational technology platform based on metaverse, and artificial intelligence can help students by making learning more engaging and collaborative. Rather than memorizing facts, students learn by doing and through critical thinking in an immersive environment. The uptake of STEM courses is low as many students find it difficult. Our proposed EdTech platform intends to make learning STEM courses fun and less challenging. STEM graduates are needed for digital transformation, industry 4.0, and sustainable development.

The successful PhD candidate will be provided a scholarship and will be based at RMIT Vietnam’s Hanoi Campus.
