The impact of generative design within architecture is not through novel form, but through the creation of a new space of architectural possibility negotiated between material behaviour, structural performance, formal expression and ornamental or tectonic detail. It is this negotiation of underlying design logics and intention, not the simulation of appearance, that makes generative design a powerful method of design speculation.
That capacity for negotiation has been steadily eroded by the proliferation of the dominant modes of generative AI — machine learning and diffusion models. These systems generate images by interpolating within the latent space of precedent; there is no material model, no structural model and no understanding of the underlying processes of formation.
