Dr. Maj Plemenitas, founder of London and Melbourne-based design research practice Linkscale and the Amphibious LAB, introduces new approaches for design with Water and generative Cross Scale Design through the inclusion and utilisation of environmental processes working in collaboration with strategic design inputs, resulting in increased design agency spanning across the spatial, temporal, and operational scales.

Dr. Maj Plemenitas is an inventor, researcher, and academic with an established design research practice and critically acclaimed international track record in Europe, Asia, the Americas, Australia and Oceania. His recent academic appointments at RMIT LA and UCL Bartlett include Associate Professorship and co-Directorship of the MA/MLA Landscape Architecture programs (UCL).

At the Bartlett, UCL, Plemenitas has led award-winning Architectural Design, Urban Design, and Landscape Architecture research clusters and design studios since 2012. Plemenitas joined RMIT in 2023 and has since delivered award-winning teaching and research, including two consecutive AILA students' national awards and several other critically acclaimed awards. 

Plemenitas is best known for his pioneering work in Cross Scale Design and Multi Scale Generative Design and Production, for example, Growing Islands and Resilient Shorelines with In-situ Forces and Materials, the Amphibious Interfaces and Programmable Multi Scale Erosion, Transport and Aggregation.

His core focus is Design with Water and Environmental Dynamics.

Dr Plemenitas introduced a novel and original contribution to research and knowledge through the CSD framework that he developed. His research work is focused on the continuous evolution of Cross-Scale Design strategies, systems, and structures in Architectural, Urban, and Landscape contexts. For his innovation and original research, he received a range of awards and grants, including the Innovation in Construction Award and the critically acclaimed Award from Holcim Foundation (selected from more than 5000 projects) for his work related to Growing Islands and Resilient Shorelines with In-situ Forces and Materials.

Plemenitas lectures internationally at leading global institutions, including Harvard GSD, UCL, AA, CMU, and UVA, among others, as well as at numerous peer-reviewed conferences in Europe, North America, Australia, and Asia. 

He exhibits globally in venues including the Royal Academy of Arts, London, Saatchi Art, and the Venice Biennale, amongst others.

Plemenitas has written and published numerous publications and peer-reviewed papers on the role of Cross-Scale Design, Territorial Scale Automation, Growing Islands and Resilient shorelines as well as Autonomous Production in Pelagic, Amphibious, Landscape, Urban, and Architectural contexts.
