Course selection

You can design your study abroad or exchange program by selecting courses from across RMIT’s extensive range of disciplines.

All courses offered to incoming Study Abroad and Exchange students are coded as either “Recommended” or “Restricted”:

  • Recommended courses: These courses are open for enrolment and have a faster approval time.
  • Restricted courses: These courses have pre-requisite requirements and usually require related prior study. Enrolment in these courses require approval from the owning RMIT School to ensure you have completed the equivalent prerequisites at your home university. RMIT cannot assess suitability prior to your application; your suitability for any selected Restricted courses will be completed after you have applied.
  • Vocational Education (Early Start Date) courses: These courses have an earlier start date. Visit the Vocational Education important dates to learn more.

A standard full time study load at RMIT is 48 credit points per semester (usually four courses). It is not possible to study more than 48 credit points in one semester. It is however possible to study a lower load (e.g. 36 credit points) in one semester. Please refer to RMIT's credit points table which provides a guideline of how other countries credit points might match RMIT.

You are required to study on-campus for the duration of your program at RMIT. We do not offer an online-only Study Abroad or Exchange option. You may be able to study one 12-point RMIT course delivered online only, as part of your wider on-campus program with us.

Course search

Use our Course Search tool to find courses of interest to you. The course type (Recommended / Restricted) and any additional requirements are noted in the Comments for each course.

You can search by course title, level of study (e.g. UGRD for Bachelor level and PGRD for Master level) and RMIT School (which broadly reflect our available academic disciplines).

To find more detailed information about a course and its prerequisites, take note of the course code from the Course Search (e.g. GRAP1245), then enter the course code in the Course Guide.

Course selection guidelines

When selecting courses you need to:

  • Ensure that you satisfy any additional requirements based on your academic history at your home university (see additional requirements below),
  • Ensure you are selecting courses at the correct study level; Bachelor level students should select undergraduate courses, Master level students should select postgraduate courses,
  • Check the suitability of your course selection and credit transfer with your home university. Please note RMIT cannot advise you on credit equivalency for your home university studies. It is your responsibility to identify suitable courses and discuss credit eligibility with your home university directly.

Please note that all courses are subject to availability and can change without notice. RMIT also reserves the right to refuse entrance to any course.

Additional requirements

Cognate study – Enrolment restricted to students in a related degree

To undertake courses in the below study areas, you need to be currently enrolled in a cognate (related) degree at your home university:

  • Art. Please note courses in our School of Art are subject to capacity. If you are selecting courses from within the School of Art, we strongly recommend you list a total of six courses in your application, with at least three being selected from other RMIT Schools (e.g. Architecture and Urban Design, Design, Media and Communication)
  • Architecture and Urban Design
  • Design
  • Fashion and Textiles
  • Media and Communication

If you select courses in your application from one of the above discipline areas, but are not currently enrolled in a cognate degree, the relevant course(s) will be removed from your application.

Campus Location

RMIT Melbourne has three campuses in Australia, and you are welcome to select courses from across any of the three campuses (City, Brunswick, or Bundoora campus).

Whilst it is possible to study courses at different campuses in the same semester, we encourage you to familiarise yourself with the distance and journey between City and Bundoora campuses as study at both locations is not recommended. Studies at both City and Brunswick campuses is possible and convenient.
