Overview
RMIT’s VCE program gives you the opportunity to complete your VCE in the heart of Melbourne, without any compulsory extra-curricular activities, allowing you to focus on your studies.
Our alternative pathway delivers Year 11 (units 1 and 2) and Year 12 (units 3 and 4) in a mature and supportive environment.
You are able to select courses according to Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) requirements and complete 16 units, including four Year 12 sequences.
What you will gain through this program
Whether you're a young person or someone a little older wanting to complete your high school education, RMIT's VCE provides you the opportunity to complete your education in an environment where you can discover your interests and learn where your skills lie.
Why study your VCE at RMIT?
You’ll be taught by experienced VCE teachers who will comprehensively prepare you for next step, whether that’s tertiary study or employment.
Details
RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches, including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations and group discussions.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester is designed to check your comprehension of course content and contributes to your ATAR. These assessments are the same as all VCE students experience and may include essays, examinations and presentations.
As you move through this program and consider what's next after completing your VCE, you'll have the opportunity to see a youth pathways coordinator, who may provide help with:
- career guidance and pathway planning
- information on courses, traineeships, apprenticeships and training options
- ongoing assistance applying for courses
- support with skills for finding employment, including résumés and letters of application
- referral to health, housing, counselling or financial support services.
All programs are delivered in English.
You will have access to online resources through the myRMIT student portal.
A full-time Year 11 program is offered on the City campus.
Full-time students study 5 courses per semester and part-time students will study 1 to 3 courses per semester. Each course involves 4 hours of class time and an average of 4 hours study time per week.
RMIT offers a VCE program at Year 11 (units 1 and 2) and Year 12 (units 3 and 4) for those seeking to complete secondary schooling. You must select courses according to Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) requirements and complete 16 units in total.
If you are over 18 and have not studied full-time for 12 months, you are classified as an adult student and can omit units 1 and 2. You may need to undertake preparatory work prior to attempting Year 12.
Year 11 classes begin in January and July (midyear intake).
Students in the RMIT VCE program who have a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition, who believe their situations will affect their studies or assessments should meet and discuss special provisions with their Program Coordinator as soon as possible. Program Coordinators will liaise with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) or the Equitable Learning Service (ELS) as necessary. VCAA oversees special examination arrangements for VCE students throughout Victoria.
Students who are primary carers of someone with a disability should also meet with the Program Coordinator to discuss potential adjustments which may be possible within the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) guidelines.

Fees

VET Student Loans
The Australian Government provides financial assistance via the VET Student Loans scheme (VSL), which allows eligible students in eligible programs to defer payment of their tuition fees, up to the maximum loan amount for their program.
How does a VET Student Loan work?
If your VSL application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT your tuition fees on your behalf, up to the maximum loan amount for your program.
If your program is eligible for the VSL scheme and has a loan cap that doesn’t cover the total amount of the tuition fees for your program, then you’ll need to pay RMIT the difference once you exceed the cap.
Your VET Student Loan becomes part of your Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) debt. You will start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is adjusted each year (this also applies if you are still studying).
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.
For more information see VET Student Loans or Study Assist.
In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.
The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2018 is $298.
For more information about calculating your actual SSAF see Paying SSAF.
You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.
In addition to tuition fees you also need to pay for:
- Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) in each calendar year.
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) - Student visa holders must have cover for the total duration of their visa.
- Some programs incur additional expenses.
You also need to account for your living expenses. Estimate the cost of living in Melbourne.
