The Information Security and Network Science Research Group is focused on the security and assurance of information in all its forms.

Our researchers are interested in all aspects of information security and assurance, from analysis to the structure and dynamics of networks and the information they carry.

Based in the School of Science, the Group strives to be at the top in internationally selected research areas, to attract outstanding research students and to make a real impact with results.

The Information Security and Network Science Research Group focuses on three main research areas.

Our current research interests are in three main areas listed below. We have active projects in each of these areas and have been or are externally funded through industry, government or philanthropic partnerships in many of them.

Information security and assurance

  • anomaly detection and inference in heteregenous networks
  • biometrics: friction ridge and vascular biometric templates, individuality and biocryptographic systems
  • coding theory, cryptography
  • communications sequence design
  • risk management for information systems
  • network science.

Big data, especially when modeled as networks

  • characterisation, clustering and classification of complex networks, subgraph and motif detection
  • contact and infection networks
  • dynamics and prediction
  • knowledge discovery
  • matching across databases
  • foundations in algebra, combinatorics and information theory.

Combinatorial designs: theory and applications

  • Hadamard matrices and cocyclic matrices
  • integer sequences
  • information theory, guessing entropy
  • semigroups and semifields.
