Courses and Higher Degrees by Research

There are a range of ways to get involved with the Behavioural Business Lab. Contact us to find out how to work with us.

Behavioural Researchers

The BBL actively seeks new members within RMIT. If you are a researcher at RMIT, either in the College of Business or other relevant units, and you are (interested in) using behavioural, psychological or experimental methods, please get in touch with us to discuss how we can work together. We also have a network of affiliates with behavioural researchers in other institutions in Australia and further afield who regularly collaborate. If you are interested in working with us, please get in touch.

RMIT HDR application procedure

MPhil and PhD

We are continuously recruiting new higher degree for research students if we think we are able to offer the right infrastructure and the applicant is willing and able to complete successfully. If you are interested in exploring this option, then we would advise you to do the following:

Identify the best-suited person(s) from among the BBL members in terms of their research expertise matching your proposed research. This may be one or more people. Approach the HDR coordinator by email (efm.hdrstudents@rmit.edu.au) and indicate who you would be interested in being supervised by. In that email, add your CV, a research proposal, transcripts and, if needed, proof of English proficiency. Your research proposal explains the WHAT, WHY and HOW of your project: What are you interested in and why is it important, what has been written on this, what do you hope to add, what methods will you use?

Once the HDR coordinator has assessed eligibility for the program the proposal will be sent to your preferred supervisors in BBL. If we are interested in supervising your research on your chosen topic we will invite you to attend a video conference with that supervisor to mutually assess suitability. We will ask you questions, and you can ask us questions also.

We will then tell you whether we think we could offer you supervision. If yes, then you would be explained by the HDR coordinator how to make a formal application

You need to be sure that you have funding (for study fees, living expenses) in place - either from your own funds or by scholarship.

To get an idea of what kind of research topics we currently work on please refer to the Research Topics and Studies page. However, we also strongly encourage you to approach us with your original research ideas.

In the Behavioural Business Lab we have expertise in supervising research using the following research methods:

  • Laboratory experiments
  • Online and virtual experiments
  • Field experiments
  • Quasi experiments
  • Questionnaires/surveys
  • Eye-tracking experiments
  • Mixed methods

Some examples of higher-degree research projects that we currently supervise or have supervised in the past are listed below:

  • ‘To preserve unity while almost allowing for chaos’: The effect of unity-in-variety in product design aesthetics on consumer appreciation
  • Why do things catch on? Self-concept and electronic word-of-mouth
  • Tax morale and religion in Turkey
  • Pro-social and strategic behaviour in virtual and online communities
  • Field-experimental measurement of consumer ethnocentrism
  • The relationship between cultural diversity and trust in India
  • Gamified behavioural nudge
  • Mitigating bubbles with intrinsic value nudging
  • Moral foundations of pro-social behaviour in different cultures
  • Experimental study of dishonesty and asset misreporting behaviour
  • Field experiment on anti-social preferences and conflict in Indonesia
  • Laboratory experiments on the effects of promises and partial promises on trust

Interested potential HDR students should email enquiries to behavioural.business.lab@rmit.edu.au

Undergraduate Minors in Behavioural Business

We offer RMIT undergraduate students the chance to obtain one of two minors in behavioural business. Behavioural business refers to psychology and behavioural economics as applied to different business and policy domains. Part of the teaching involves classes in the laboratory facility to gain familiarity with conducting scientific studies and immersion in behavioural and psychological tasks to examine your own decision making. Each course also includes an industry event to see how practitioners apply behavioural insights to policy.

Click here for more information about the minor programmes we offer.

Postgraduate Global Intensive Study Tour in Behavioural Business

The BBL offers the annual Global Study Tour in Behavioural Business to all RMIT Masters students. It takes place annually at RMIT Europe in Barcelona, Spain.

The course is a mixture of small-group intensive teaching and visits to companies, NGOs and government agencies in Barcelona to see the application of behavioural business to policy first hand. These have included the charitable foundation of FC Barcelona the cognitive marketing agency M+F=! and fashion house Desigual.
