What's new in STEM at RMIT in 2023

What’s next stems from here. RMIT’s STEM degrees are flexible, industry-connected and will help you define your future career.

RMIT’s recently updated Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) courses have been redesigned to allow you to grab hold of the future and forge your own path, giving you more control over your study, more opportunities, and more chances for hands-on learning.   

Study your way and decide where it will take you. Explore new majors and minors across the fields of STEM, dive into the Bootcamp2Studio model and discover technology-focused courses that’ll prepare you for the future. Whatever your dream STEM degree is, take a sneak peek at how it will look at RMIT in 2023.

Common first year

Not sure what interest you want to pursue? RMIT’s common first year gives you a chance to explore a mix of the fields that interest you. You can then make a more informed choice of what to study for the rest of your degree, without extending your overall degree length.  

For example, if you're interested in Science but aren't sure which area you wanted to focus on out of Chemistry and Mathematics, there's now flexibility to study both, or delay your choice of major until your second year. This gives you the freedom and flexibility to study what you want, even if you change your mind. 

Future Technology Skills courses 

Another exciting update is the introduction of Future Technology Skills courses that are now embedded in STEM programs. These tech-focused courses will give you a grounding in the innovative tech of tomorrow, better preparing you for what’s next in your future industry. 

Online opportunities 

Balancing university, work and life can be a challenge, but that shouldn’t stop you from gaining skills that could stem into your next career move. 

To give you greater flexibility and help prepare for the changing world of work, we’ve made sure that 25% of your STEM degree can be studied online. New digital study opportunities, like virtual labs equipped with AR and VR, will ensure you have a future-focused study experience that fits easily into your work-life schedule.

Bootcamp2Studio model 

Our Information Technology programs have been rethought and the Bootcamp2Studio model has been introduced. This model allows you to gain the knowledge and skills you need and the opportunity to apply them in real-world scenarios. The best part is this model is a great way of testing what you’ve learned without the need for exams. 

The bootcamp that this is referring to is a focused intensive period at the start of a subject that gives you a solid foundation of theory. This allows you to then transition your learning into a studio session, where you’ll apply these skills by solving a problem creatively with others from different disciplines. It’s a great way to get a handle on the basics in technical programs!

Sustainable and connected

At RMIT, we know how important STEM is to ensure that we all enjoy a future that’s sustainable and connected.

New majors and minors

Majors and minors are specialisations that you choose as part of your study- that allow you to cater your degree to the things that you’re interested in most! Depending on what majors and minors you choose, your degree could lead to all kinds of different career outcomes.

Studying STEM with RMIT means having the agency and the opportunities you need to stem into the career of your choice.  

Not only are there new degree options in 2023, but many of the STEM degrees have been given exciting new majors and minors that allow you to better cater your degree to your passions and interests.  

In addition to these expanded choices, you also have the option to:

  • Choose a double major in Science and Computing courses that will allow you to specialise in two areas of study and graduate with a competitive edge without extending your degree length. 
  • Select cross-disciplinary minors that complement your personalised study journey. Imagine combining your interest in Space Science with your Environmental Science program. You can even switch to a new major if you find your first choice doesn’t suit. 

New majors and/or minors can be found across Science, Health, Information Technology, Engineering, Psychology and Aviation, as well as a few new study options such as a four-year option for both the Bachelor of Computer Science and the Bachelor of Data Science

These changes to our STEM programs allow you to decide where your learning journey will take you. With RMIT what’s next stems from here and branches off into countless ideas and opportunities.
