In 2018, Ukrainian-Canadian author Maria Reva set out to write a novel about the art of rare snail breeding in Ukraine and the equally perplexing world of modern dating. Midway through the writing process, Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Overnight, the setting of her novel was being destroyed in real time – and her only way forward was to fold this catastrophe into the narrative.

The result is Endling, a daringly inventive novel that is at once a devastating war novel about modern-day Ukraine, a hilarious satire of the mail-order bride industry, a eulogy to almost-extinct species and a metafictional examination of the ethics of writing about conflict and violence. With Maria Tumarkin.
