Subcontractor management in construction

Summary

This project aims to examine and address the challenges of subcontractor management and WHS compliance in the NSW construction industry. This research is being undertaken in partnership with the Centre for Work Health and Safety NSW.

Subcontracting is pervasive in the Australian construction industry, where over 98% of companies are small businesses operating as subcontractors and employing fewer than 20 people. Such extensive subcontracting, coupled with multi-tiers of subcontractors, imposes significant challenges for WHS management.

This project will adopt a system dynamics (SD) approach to understand subcontracting arrangements and WHS compliance in the NSW construction industry and design and test solutions to improve subcontractor WHS compliance.
