Facilities

The Usability Lab, located within the School of Computing Technologies, is a purpose-built facility dedicated to research on human interaction with computer systems and information technologies.

About RMIT’s Usability Lab

The primary laboratory space is equipped with desktop workstations and advanced sensing and tracking technologies, enabling study participants to engage directly with experimental systems and tasks.

Sessions are supported by a dedicated observation suite that allows researchers to monitor and analyse participant interactions in real time without interrupting the research process, preserving the naturalistic conditions required for high-quality behavioural data.

The lab features a comprehensive suite of monitoring tools suitable for both controlled laboratory experiments and field-based research. These include high-precision screen-based eye trackers for analysing visual attention, mobile eye-tracking glasses for studying interaction in real-world contexts, wireless EEG headsets for assessing neural activity and cognitive load, and wearable devices such as Empatica wristbands for capturing physiological signals.

Collectively, this infrastructure supports rigorous investigation of attention, cognitive effort, emotional response, and decision-making, enabling fine-grained evaluation of user experience, system usability, and human–AI interaction across both realistic and controlled environments.
