STAFF PROFILE
Professor Lesley Duxbury
My role is to build and support excellent research in the School of Art, particularly in creative practice-led research and to supervise postgraduate research candidates in my areas of expertise.
Lesley Duxbury was born in the UK, and has lived and worked in Australia since 1983. She uses both traditional and contemporary Print media—Photography and Printmaking—to make works that question our perceptions of the natural environment. She has been exhibiting for the past twenty-five years in Australia and the United Kingdom with solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, and more than 50 selected group exhibitions in Australia, Korea, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Her most recent exhibitions include: 2013: Narrating Place in Convergence at RMIT Design Hub; Bogong ELECTRIC at Bogong Village, Victoria; Sky Lab at LaTrobe Regional Gallery; Local Weather at Gippsland Art Gallery, Sale. 2012: Luminous World, Art Gallery of Western Australia. 2011: 2112 Imagining the Future at RMIT Gallery; Out of the West at National Gallery of Australia. 2010: The Stony Rises Project at RMIT Gallery and touring Victoria. 2009: Melt at Sydney University Gallery and RMIT Project Space Gallery. 2008: Cold Front at Lake Macquarie Art Gallery, NSW. 2007: Proof at Ian Potter Centre, National Gallery of Victoria. 2006: Constable and Australla at National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Her work is held in all major public collections in Australia.
Lesley’s research interests include sustainability and the natural environment, in particular the atmosphere and its phenomena, which she explores through work that emulates and recreates our experiences and perception of it. The phenomenological experiences of extended walks in remote landscapes, during which Lesley takes photographs and makes extensive notes, are the impetus for her investigations. She is also interested in the use of text in art and the role it can play in focusing attention and altering the readings of images allowing for a personal intervention and interpretation.
As an educator she publishes widely on Practice-led research and research supervision.
