Education Portfolio

The Education Portfolio provides support services to our programs, including professional development of academic staff, improvement of the student experience and learning and teaching outcomes.

The Portfolio is headed by Professor Sherman Young, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education and Vice President who leads the planning and implementation of the University’s strategies related to RMIT’s academic programs and the  student experience. The Portfolio is responsible for services to support the quality of RMIT programs, including the professional development of academic staff, continuous improvement of the student experience, learning and teaching outcomes and the management of learning and research information sources.

The Education Portfolio plays a key role in empowering students to access education, participate actively in the life of the University and achieve successful and fulfilling lives beyond graduation. The provision of a stimulating and satisfying experience for students is a priority for the University.

The Portfolio is responsible for:

  • development and implementation of the Academic Plan in accordance with University strategy as it relates to best practice in learning and teaching, student experience and academic staffing
  • oversight of quality assurance for RMIT programs and their contribution to the development of improved outcomes for students and partners
  • development and implementation of policy relating to academic profile and its impact on academic programs and staff
  • leadership and management of relevant projects deemed as priorities in the RMIT Strategic Plan and Business Plan
  • provision of learning resources through the RMIT University Library
  • identifying and planning for administrative and support services to meet the needs of different student cohorts, on and offshore, across the student life cycle
  • promoting access to Vocational Education and Higher Education by students from diverse backgrounds and targeted equity groups
  • developing and maintaining systems, processes and procedures related to the student record.

The Education Portfolio supports the following groups.

The Academic Registrar's Group (ARG) is responsible for the administrative, policy and Integrity activities of the University which relate to the student lifecycle. Our vision for academic services design at RMIT has centred around best practice through strong governance, advice and service. ​​

Core University services provided by the ARG include: academic policy, student complaints, student conduct, university appeals, academic governance and quality, program and course administration, student system configuration and management, admission governance, enrolments, short course administration, student records administration, assessment support including special consideration and academic progress, results and program completions, remission of debt in special circumstances, examinations and graduation

We lead RMIT’s education plan, and work with the University to drive transformational educational experiences through consistent, coherent, and innovative pedagogy, curriculum, technologies, and staff development, reward and recognition.

The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education (ODVCE) supports the Portfolio to plan, prioritise and manage its activities and projects effectively, and coordinates in planning and achieving the outcomes outlined in the Portfolio’s annual operating plan, as well as the associated goals and deliverables across a wide range of transformation projects.

The Centre for Academic Quality and Enhancement (CAQE) delivers a sustainable and enterprise-wide approach to academic quality.

CAQE works in partnership and close collaboration with RMIT Colleges, Schools and other Portfolios to support staff to establish a robust approach to academic quality across the University through consistency and coherence of quality frameworks, processes and practices and support staff capability development to ensure a culture of academic quality and compliance is embedded in everything we do.

Importantly this enables the focus for our academic and teaching community to be on delivering exceptional education offerings to our students. Enhancing the quality of our learner's experience, ensuring they are ready for life and work.
