Charles Blackall Journalists' Scholarship

For journalism students who need assistance with accommodation expenses who demonstrate financial hardship; worth up to $4,878.60.

This scholarship provides up to $4,878.60 for one year.

One scholarship available.

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:

  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, Australian permanent resident, permanent humanitarian visa holder or an international student in Australia
  • be enrolling full-time in semester 1 and 2 2024, in either:
  • have at least six months of full-time study left to complete
  • be able to demonstrate financial hardship such as (but not limited to):
    • receiving a government tested low income benefit or having a Centrelink Health Care Card 
  • be able to demonstrate accommodation expenses that this scholarship will be used for (see supporting documentation for information on types of evidence)
  • be able to demonstrate that you are the author of at least one published journalistic work. A work of journalism must have been paid and may include paid freelance work. The work does not include work published only on student publications or self-published blogs with fewer than 1000 unique readers

Successful recipients must use the funds to pay for accommodation expenses.

Supporting documentation

Depending on your circumstances, you will need to provide different types of evidence and material to support your scholarship application. Applications without supporting documents will not be considered.

Accommodation expense evidence: Your application will be ineligible if you do not supply sufficient information for the scholarship panel to determine that you have accommodation expenses and how much those expenses are. Your evidence must include the following: 

  • your full name
  • residential address
  • how much rent/board/mortgage you pay and how often (e.g., weekly/fortnightly/monthly) 
  • for accommodation expenses without a lease or mortgage agreement, you must include the name and contact details of who you pay your accommodation expenses to for the scholarship panel to call. 

Types of evidence may include:

  • rent (lease agreement)
  • board (statutory declaration of accommodation expenses per month or a letter from your landlord; both documents must have full contact details of your landlord) 
  • mortgage agreement (mortgage agreement which demonstrates monthly/fortnightly mortgage payments)

Journalist work evidence:

  • attach or provide a URL link to a document that is your own work, you have been paid for, and it has been published. Note: A work of journalism must have been paid and may include paid freelance work. The work does not include work published only on student publications or self-published blogs with fewer than 1000 unique readers.

The scholarship application process is highly competitive with a limited number of scholarships available. Unfortunately, not all eligible applicants will receive one.
