A Commonwealth supported place (CSP) means your university tuition fees are jointly paid by you and the Commonwealth Government. Your share (aka student contribution) is set by the government and determined by the discipline areas (aka bands) of your individual enrolled subjects – not the overall course.

Eligibility for a Commonwealth supported place (CSP)

To be eligible for a CSP, you must be:

  • an Australian citizen
  • an Australian permanent visa holder, or
  • a New Zealand citizen.

There are also residency requirements:

  • Australian citizen: You meet the CSP residency requirements if you do some or all of your study in Australia.
  • Permanent visa holder/NZ citizen: You meet the CSP residency requirements if you’re resident in Australia for the enitre duration of your study.

As a CSP student, you may be eligible to apply for a HECS-HELP loan, which can be used to defer payment of up to 100% of your student contribution fees.
