PhD Scholarship in Cultural Impacts of Regenerative Fashion Innovations

RMIT's School of Fashion and Textiles invites applications for a fully-funded PhD scholarship exploring the cultural and community impacts of regenerative fashion innovations.

Research will explore the cultural implications of regenerative fashion innovations, with emphasis on impacts for global south and First Nations communities, in Australia or overseas. Focus areas can include community impacts of biomaterials, recycling technologies, or regenerative business models and policies.

  • Have NOT previously completed a PhD.  -Be able to commence the Program in early 2026.

This PhD project is supported by a Vice-Chancellor's Principal Research Fellowship on Regenerative Fashion Systems, led by Associate Professor Rimi Khan. The Fellowship research investigates the cultural and community impacts of sustainability innovations in global south communities, particularly low-carbon, resource-efficient materials that supply fashion systems, and new biomaterials which have potential to enhance community wellbeing and ecological resilience. The PhD candidate is expected to formulate a research project relating to the aims of the Fellowship, explore the cultural implications of regenerative fashion innovations, with particular emphasis on impacts for global south and First Nations communities, either in Australia or overseas. Possible areas of focus include (but are not limited to): cultural and community impacts of biomaterials, recycling technologies, or regenerative business models and policies. The preferred candidate will have a background in fashion studies, cultural studies, or enterprise studies with a strong interest in regenerative materials and fashion systems. The candidate will have the ability to engage in independent, reflective research at a high level.
