Research supervision
Dr Lisa Waller is a Professor of Digital Communication in the School of Media and Communication
Lisa's research and teaching centres on digital journalism. Her current projects concentrate on the role of media, journalism and social media activism in the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (DP190101282); developing and road-testing an innovations agenda for Australia's country media in the digital era (LP180100813); and generating new knowledge about effective strategies for improving Indigenous representation in the wider news media ecology (LP180100201). In previous Australian Research Council funded projects she has examined the mediatization of Indigenous Affairs policy and deficit discourse in news coverage of Indigenous education. Her work has also provided fresh theoretical insights on local journalism, investigated the practice of media shaming and explored how a 'rural imaginary' shapes media representations of regional Australia. Her book publications include: Local Journalism in a Digital World (Palgrave) and The Dynamics of News and Indigenous Policy in Australia (Intellect)
