This scholarship is made possible by a generous donation from Mrs. Christine Hay, in memory of her husband, David Hay who passed away in 2011. David was an active participant and contributor to the logistics industry for over 50 years. He commenced work in the industry at the age of 15 in 1959. A transport depot job was followed by work as a long-haul interstate truck driver for Mills Transport beginning in 1964. From 2004 until his retirement in 2009, David was the Managing Director of FBT Transwest.

During his career David was committed to education. He completed a Diploma of Transport Management in 1970. Additional logistics and management programs followed, each one enabling him to build his opportunities in the industry.  Throughout his career, David supported and encouraged others to maximise their potential. The Hay and Backman Supply Chain and Logistics Scholarship serves that purpose today.

In 2023, Christine renamed the scholarship to the Hay and Backman Supply Chain and Logistics Scholarship to also honour Ivan Backman who was instrumental in the initial establishment of the scholarship and contributed significantly to the logistics industry during his career.
