What is Masters Advanced Standing and how does it work?

Masters Advanced Standing is a process that supports postgraduate coursework students with a reduction in their course duration based on their prior study combined with relevant industry experience.

When a masters by coursework has been developed to deepen your knowledge and skills, but you've already completed some study in that discipline, we can reduce the volume of learning so you're not going over the same content.

What is Masters Advanced Standing?

Masters Advanced Standing is a specific form of Credit for Prior Study, which means it's a reduction in your volume of learning based on related prior study. Sometimes you can use your industry experience to strengthen or increase the volume of that advanced standing.

This is pre-approved credit you can get at the start of your master’s degree, based on a previous qualification (and sometimes work experience).

In addition to Masters Advanced Standing, the College of Business and Law (CoBL) also use the CoBL RPL Fastrack process to assess Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for select postgraduate courses.

How does Masters Advanced Standing work?

For starters, Masters Advanced Standing isn't a subject-by-subject credit transfer. It’s awarded in blocks of 48, 72 or 96 credit points, depending on what you bring to the table.

To be eligible to apply for Masters Advanced Standing, you need one of the following:

  • a completed AQF 7 or higher, in the same discipline as the master’s
  • an international qualification equivalent to AQF 7 or higher, and at least 2 years of relevant work experience.

In some cases, you can apply with a completed bachelor’s in a different discipline, and at least 2 years of relevant work experience. Check your course guide for details.

Important information for International students

International students can also apply for Masters Advanced Standing. Because this can reduce the length of your studies, it may also reduce the duration of your student visa.

How to apply for Masters Advanced Standing at RMIT

To be considered for Masters Advanced Standing:

  1. Choose the Masters degree you wish to apply for
  2. Apply for the degree direct to RMIT - you can find the information you need about this on your relevant course Apply page, or visit How to apply.
    • Your application for your RMIT course will include all of your previous academic history including copies of official academic documents (transcripts) for both completed and incomplete studies, as well as your CV detailing job duties in your work/professional experience. This information will then be assessed at the same time as your application to determine your eligibility for Masters Advanced Standing. You do not need to submit a separate application for this.
    • If you are missing any documentation in your application this will be requested by the college admissions team
  3. If you are successful in gaining a place in the degree you will be notified of your offer by email. Your offer email will include the details of any Masters Advanced Standing and/or Recognition of Prior Learning (CoBL Fasttrack) to be applied.
  4. Once the offer is accepted and you enrol in the course, the Credit Transfer team process any exemptions/RPL in your study account.

International applicants must opt in to be assessed for Masters Advanced Standing because it can impact your ability to apply for a post-study work visa.

CoBL applicants: you can’t directly apply for accelerated courses.

For example, if you’re applying for a Master of Business Administration, don’t use the accelerated plan code of MC199EXE15. Instead, apply for the standard plan MC199P15, and add a note to your application, saying you wish to be considered for the accelerated version.

CoBL Fastrack RPL process

About the CoBL Fastrack RPL process

In addition to Masters Advanced Standing, the College of Business and Law (CoBL) also use the Fastrack process to assess Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for select postgraduate courses. This means that your eligibility for Fasttrack RPL will be assessed in line with your Masters Advanced Standing when you submit your application unlike regular RPL which is assessed only after enrolment.

You must hold a managerial role or higher to qualify for RPL (assistant manager roles are not eligible).
