Throughout your study in this certificate, you will have the opportunity to sample all key areas of media production. Explore sound and vision editing, create storyboards, learn the basics of 2D animation, user interface and application design, operate location and studio camera systems, and learn about the different roles in a screen and media production environment.

Learning and teaching

Throughout this certificate, your learning will emphasise practical applications of your newly developed knowledge and skills. You will learn through creative projects, productions and activities both independently and within group contexts.

Your classes will largely be taught in studio format, or computer lab-based environments. You'll use industry-standard production equipment and Adobe Creative Suite, mirroring industry best practice.

Assessment methods

Your assessment in this certificate will include both portfolio submissions and the demonstration of skills acquired through your study. Some of your assessments will be group-based, but many projects will be conducted and graded independently.

Other assessment may include presentations, reports, assignments and projects.

Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This course is competency-based and has been designed to help you develop the practical skills and knowledge necessary to work effectively in your chosen field. You will learn and be assessed by practising and demonstrating your capabilities, all of which can be readily applied in the workplace.

In addition to the specific vocational skills you build throughout this course, you will also develop a set of essential employability skills, including communication, planning, organising, and problem solving, self-management, initiative and teamwork. These foundational skills will enable you to navigate the world of work, collaborate effectively with others, and successfully get the job done.

As part of your study in this certificate, you will undertake 4 core subjects and 9 electives.

The areas of learning covered throughout your study include:

  • vision and sound editing
  • digital design, including interface and application design
  • animation and storyboarding 
  • creative production planning and management
  • creative industry investigation and work practices.

There is a strong emphasis on the practical application of learning through creative projects, productions and activities that incorporate the skills and knowledge requirements of each subject. You will work on both individual and group projects over the duration of the course.

Delivery is primarily in studio and computer lab-based environments. You will use a variety of current industry standard production equipment and a variety of applications within the Adobe Creative Suite.

You need to satisfy all of the following academic (entry) requirements to be considered for entry into this course.

There are no minimum academic entry requirements for this course. Applicants must meet the minimum university entry requirements.

There are no prerequisite subjects required for entry into this qualification.

A selection task is not required for entry into this qualification.

You need to satisfy all of the following requirements to be considered for entry into this course.

You must have successfully completed a qualification recognised by RMIT as equivalent to the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) with a minimum average of 65% (see calculator below).

Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies course or a recognised post secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.

Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee entry. Your application will still need to be assessed and accepted.

To study this course you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:

  • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)
  • TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 79 (with minimum of 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 58 (with no communication band less than 50)
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 176 with no less than 169 in any component.
