Dr. Sam Carroll-Bell is a Lecturer in Global and Language Studies with the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies at RMIT University, Melbourne. Sam's research critically examines the framing and impact of international development activities in the Asia-Pacific region. His doctorate explored the epistemologies of international development workers, delving into the intersection of knowledge production, cultural dynamics, and development practices. Alongside publishing peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings, Sam has contributed to policy briefs and commissioned reports on regional development and sustainability.
As an experienced tertiary educator, Sam has coordinated and taught into a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. His teaching portfolio, grounded in global studies, includes Global Governance, Global Security, Humanitarian Interventions in an Age of Crisis, Intercultural Communication, Peacebuilding and Reconciliation, and Theories of Development.
Away from academia, Sam is a founding member of Agile Development Group, a Cambodian development organisation specialising in inclusive design and community based agricultural programs. He also has led several development initiatives in Vietnam and continues to be an active member of Matadalan Ba Malu, a Melbourne based program facilitating high quality English language training and cross-cultural exchange for East Timorese women operating in a community development context.
