Intercessions by Axel Garay is a photo-media and audiovisual installation that explores whether the heart can stay wild within an increasingly simulated and algorithmically led world. This immersive exhibition brings together a suite of new video works and a series of cameraless cyanotype photographs accompanied by an original soundscape by cellist Thomas Veitch.
Together these interwoven forms expand on and critique the ‘immersive arts’ and consider how the ‘algorithmic age’ is affecting our ability to immerse ourselves with our materials, our world, art, our Gods and ourselves.
The works in this exhibition form a part of Garay’s studio-based PhD at the RMIT School of Art and provide an opportunity for him to actively engage with audiences and present his practice research in the public realm.
As a proud Meriam (Eastern Torres Strait Islander), Puerto Rican and Malaysian queer artist living in Narrm, Garay approaches all his work with an unwavering critique of the current ills of our algorithmic age while retaining a strong, connected spirit and wild heart.
Join us to celebrate the opening of this exhibition on Wednesday 15 July from 5–7pm at First Site Gallery. Everyone welcome.
Intercessions is a part of the On-Site exhibition suite, a project showcasing the creative research of RMIT postgraduate candidates at First Site Gallery.
