Tech & Trades Experience Day

Experience RMIT's tech and trades courses these July school holidays!

You're invited to the Tech and Trades Experience Day, where you'll experience what it's like to get hands on at RMIT in workshops that feature the tools and facilities our staff and students use.

It's a day full of discoveries and workshops where you can try out your options long before finishing high school. There will be everything from robots to carpentry – when you register choose the two that excite you most!

The event will have an industry guest panel where you’ll get an inside look into your future career and how industries will look when you graduate. Outside of the panel and workshops, there will be plenty of chances to chat with your future teachers and learn about life at RMIT.

If you’re a parent or guardian, this is a great chance to learn about the opportunities at RMIT and how you can support your teen as they consider what their future holds.

The workshop spots are limited, so be sure to register early and secure your place.

* Explore your interests and career options in hands-on workshops these school holidays!

* Interested in a workshop that's full? Join our waiting list to be notified if any spots become available closer to the day!

Choose two of these workshops:

1. Compact Design for Tiny House Living
Discover what it takes to build a tiny home in a workshop that’ll leave a huge impression. Explore environmental challenges, respond creatively to limited resources and learn how to maximise passive design.

2. The Surveying the Land
What does measuring land involve, and why is it so important? You’ll find out in this surveying workshop, where you’ll get hands on with mapping instruments and techniques used in the field, including laser scanners.

3. R1: Build and Race a Mini Car
Race day is almost here! Flex your mechanical engineering muscles to design and build a mini dragster from balsa wood, using glue and basic tools, before racing it on a real track.

4. Design a Green Home
Get hands-on and design your dream sustainable house. Add solar panels, rainwater tanks and shade trees, and see just how green your home can be. You’ll even get a sustainability score.

5. Light Bulb Moment!
We’re surrounded by lights and circuitry – it’s time to find out how it all works. Learn about coding controls and how they bring life to systems in the real-world. Then build your own circuit code and change how a light behaves.

6. Catch the Hacker
Become a cyber security expert and protect a network from digital attacks. Find out how to defend a system from security threats and take matters into your own hands by keeping a network secure.

7. Create a Life Management App
We use apps every day, but do you ever think about what goes into deciding how they look? Design your own app to manage study, sport, screen time and sleep using AI and UX design principles.

8. Control a Factory From Afar
Have you ever wondered what kind of tech remotely controls factories? This is your chance to design your own. Create an app that lets you control the systems and automated functions of factories from conveyor belts to lights.

9. The Robot Playground
Is your robot running? Well, you better tell it to come back! In this workshop, you’ll interact with robots and see how they translate commands into behaviour. Learn about robot electronics, coding and how they work together.

10. Cool it with Refrigeration
Become a refrigeration specialist for a day. Install, maintain and fix the systems that keep us cool (and warm). Learn all about how these systems work and what’s involved, from piping to wiring to refrigerant gases.

11. Completing the Circuit
Build an electrical circuit and see how it delivers power to devices and systems. In this workshop, you’ll wire circuits based on drawings, control the flow of power, and see how electrical systems function.

12. Carpentry Collaboration
Carpentry is more than hammers and nails. Find out how different trades interact on a worksite and the intricacies of building a house. Then learn how to use key equipment and tools by building a stool.

13. Plumbing the Pipes
Get on the tools of the plumbing trade. In this workshop, you’ll learn the intricacies of connecting pipes using tools like pop rivet guns and test your skills with both plastic and copper piping.
