About

John has 20 years’ experience in teaching and research at universities. He has a particular interest in Southeast Asia and its media relations with Australia

Success in category one grants has seen his participation as a Chief Investigator in ARC Discovery or Linkage (Associate Investigator) grants totalling over one million dollars. He has supervised candidates for Honours and Masters theses as well as successful doctoral projects  including students from Thailand and Indonesia.

A former radio journalist and an experienced audio producer, John has written for newspapers, published book chapters on music and culture and produced programs for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

For 12 years, until 2024, John was Managing Editor for Continuum; a journal of media and cultural studies a respected tier one journal in media and communications.

John lives in regional Victoria and is an active volunteer for community and civic organisations and was recently involved in the political campaign for a local community independent for the 2025 federal election. John contributed print articles and featured in television and online advertisements.
