The Master of Fashion (Design) allows you to explore advanced approaches to fashion. The exploratory space of RMIT’s fashion studios will enable you to critically investigate and develop your practice, working both independently and with your peers alongside leading local and global practitioners.
The Master of Fashion (Design) gives you the platform to extend your fashion design practice, culminating in a unique body of work, such as an extensive fashion collection that will be publicly showcased.
This program will enable you to develop your knowledge, proficiency and expertise within a global fashion environment, underpinned by an in-depth understanding of social and cultural shifts and how they impact on the fashion system.
Throughout your studies you will build critical relationships and connectivity with the global fashion industry that will influence your practice in response to fashion, related industries and creative practices. Together with these alliances, leading researchers and practitioners will support the development of your practice, research and future career intentions. You will be exposed to insights into working in international fashion practice and have the opportunity to work with high-profile companies. These experiences will assist in realising your independent fashion concepts within an international context.
By positioning your practice within the relevant industry context, you will be able to innovate and challenge existing communities of practice. You will graduate from this program with an advanced mastery and knowledge to interrogate fashion through research and practice and contribute to the future direction of fashion industries.

The unique studio class environment of the Master of Fashion (Design) is a creative incubator for you to challenge ideas and innovate.
You will develop your design skills, conceptual thinking, critical analysis and practical expertise to support original ideas combined with depth of research for proposed design opportunities. You will have advanced theoretical, research, technical and design capabilities within the fashion discipline.
You will undertake an independent brief in the Fashion Design Studios that applies your knowledge and builds your capability to effectively respond to a current or emerging global issue. You will also extend your individual work practices with the capacity to develop complex and innovative propositions. The design studios will also provide the option of global mobility, enabling you to experience international projects, internships and study tours to support your research and creative ideas development.
A capstone experience in the final semester will enable you to develop a thoroughly researched and resolved fashion collection with a focus on the realisation of an extensive fashion body of work. This will support your opportunity to seek employment within an industry context and provides the foundation for future study in PhD and masters by research programs.
You will work in a fashion atelier environment on RMIT’s City campus and have access to state-of-the-art facilities on the Brunswick campus. The purpose of the city-based atelier is to provide you – at an advanced stage of your fashion education – immersion in a studio environment commensurate with an industry relevant model of practice.
Lecturers and academics all have strong industry relationships and experience and are connected with major industry and government bodies.
Assessment involves learning by doing and will include a range of activities such as:
- written reflection
- research projects
- panel presentations
- peer or industry review
Class sizes are approximately 15–20 students.
You will attend approximately 12 hours of classes per week, combined with intensive self-directed extra study/research per week.
All programs are delivered in English.
You will have access to online resources through the myRMIT student portal.
Through fashion research and industry engagement you are given opportunities to connect with senior industry figures and leading global companies in fashion. This program is unique in that it:
- is the only coursework Master of Fashion specialising in design in Australia

- conducts global industry-based projects with major brands and fashion designers
On graduation, you will have advanced knowledge and skills suited to a variety of career positions in creative fashion design within a global environment.
You can expect to enter into national and international design positions from premium fashion houses and large-scale corporations to small bespoke independent practices.

The program will provide you the option of global mobility, enabling you to experience global projects, internships and study tours to support your research and creative design ideas.
