Prof. McNabola is the Deputy Dean International at the School of Engineering providing strategic leadership to strengthening of the quality and impact of the Schools international research and teaching activities. He is also a Professor of Energy & Environmental Engineering, and conducts applied fluid dynamics research within these fields.
Prof. McNabola is a Civil and Environmental Engineering by training and obtained a PhD from Trinity College Dublin in environmental fluid dynamics measurement and modelling in the field of air pollution in 2008. Prior to joining RMIT he worked as an academic at the School of Engineering at Trinity College Dublin for over 16 years. He was the Director for Global Engagement at the School of Engineering, prior to this served as the Head of the Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering Department.
Prof. McNabola has experience in teaching fluid dynamics, hydropower systems, and air pollution control to undergraduate and postgraduate students for over 16 years. He has also delivered course on higher education teaching and learning, engineering surveying and hydrology during his career.
Prof. McNabola's research lies in the application of fluid dynamics modelling and experimentation in the energy and environmental engineering fields. He has been awarded over 40 research contracts from Irish and European funding agencies on topics including: hydropower, energy efficient water supply, waste heat recovery, air pollution control and modelling, GHG emissions measurement and modelling, and managing renewable energy plants using digitalisation and AI techniques.
He has published over 100 jounral articles on the above topic, has supervised 23 PhD students and 24 postdoctoral research fellows, and has spun out a number of successful start-up companies in the area of energy saving technology.
