About

Dr James Baglin is a Senior Lecturer situated in the Department of Mathematical and Geospatial Sciences within the School of Science. James is a highly accomplished educator and his engagement in the scholarship of learning and teaching has involved him in leading and collaborating on various internal and nationally competitive grant schemes. Currently, James draws on his background in psychology and statistics education to design and deliver large, award-winning data visualisations courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students. His current research is concerned with the implications of using generative models for the purpose of data visualisation design and for learning and teaching. His previous research and consulting have focused on the application of statistical modelling in health, education and community contexts.

  • 2014: Team Member, Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT), Australian Government, The Global Canopy: Linking international inbound students with domestic outbound students for improved learning and global connections ($278,000)
  • 2014: Project Leader, Australian Maths and Science Partnership Program (AMSPP), Department of Education, Australian Government Virtualising science: Using an online world to immerse junior secondary school students in real applications of maths and science curriculum ($97,360)
  • 2014: Co-investigator, Asia-Pacific Federation for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine Research Grant, Urine steroid metabolomic studies by gas chromatography mass spectrometry to aid the diagnosis of disorders of sexual development in Vietnamese children ($10,000)

Teaching interests

Currently, James draws on his background in psychology and statistics education to design and deliver large, award-winning data visualisation courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students. These courses emphasise narrative-driven, interactive data visualisation and are underpinned by Active, Applied, and Authentic (AAA) pedagogy, as well as Industry-Partnered Learning (IPL) principles.

James’ current research focuses on understanding the implications of using generative models for the purpose of data visualisation design and for learning and teaching. James is also interested in data storytelling, interactive data visualisation, and graphical perception.

James’ previous research and consulting areas include statistics education, educational technology, institutional research, applied biostatistics, sport statistics, and psychometrics.
