Andy Buchanan is a Lecturer in 3D Animation and VFX whose research and creative practice centres on experimental digital animation, exploring the boundaries of the medium through practice-based inquiry, theoretical analysis, and creative production.
His current research engages critically with the integration of artificial intelligence in animation, examining how machine learning technologies are reshaping creative workflows, transforming craft practice, and redefining the ecological, economic and cultural conditions of the industry. Current projects span animation pipeline research, experimental short film production, and the emerging potential of brain-computer interfaces for animated form.
Andy is an active practitioner with an international exhibition record spanning major festivals and symposia. He participates and publishes across animation studies, digital art, and media philosophy, and serves on the Board of the Society for Animation Studies.
