Overview

Gain skills and knowledge necessary for teaching and assessing across a range of VET-related contexts and also facilitating new insights and problem solving when working with learners.

Throughout the Diploma of Vocational Education and Training, you will learn how to:

  • facilitate new insights and effectively problem solve when working with learners
  • manage the learning process to facilitate change and action in learners
  • provide effective self-assessment in your role as teacher/trainer in a VET environment
  • program development and facilitate e-learning.

You will also learn to design and develop learning strategies and assessment tools, and build the skills to support adult learners with their language, literary and numeracy as required. 

This nationally accredited diploma is suitable for people who have the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or equivalent qualifications and experience in competency-based training.

This training is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding.

Please note: this diploma is not available for international students intending to study on a student visa. If you are holding a temporary visa (other than a student visa) and your visa has a full study entitlement, you may be eligible to apply. This course is delivered entirely online.

You will be encouraged to apply what you are learning to your particular industry and vocational education and training environment. Your facilitator will interact with you via a weekly webinar and guide you through the online learning content and activities. These include:

  • participation in online discussion
  • analysis and critique of reading material
  • peer review of materials you develop
  • research into professional practice.

Over each semester you will undertake workplace-based projects for assessment. These have a practical outcome, for example:

  • the design and development of learning materials
  • a training needs analysis for an organisation
  • an evaluation of a training program.

You will undertake teaching practicum activities in the program within 3 of the core units.

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

This course is led by highly experienced and qualified trainers who model best practice in skills required of VET practitioners. You will have the opportunity to practise these skills in a supportive online environment, as well as engage in projects in your industry and workplace.

You will be encouraged and supported to develop your links and networks within the adult and vocational education and training sector.

The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this diploma and how they can be applied in your career are described in the learning outcomes.

There are 10 units in this qualification – 6 core and 4 electives.

These cover skills in:

  • designing and developing learning strategies for qualifications
  • supporting the LLN needs of learners
  • designing learning resources 
  • designing and developing assessment tools
  • designing e-learning resources 
  • facilitating e-learning
  • evaluating training programs.

In addition, three of the compulsory units in this qualification include teaching practicum activities:

  • Provide advanced facilitation practice
  • Provide advanced assessment practice
  • Maintain and enhance professional practice.

You must arrange for a suitably qualified and experienced teacher to supervise your teaching practicum.

This program is an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level 5 teaching qualification for the vocational education and training sector. 

This program is delivered online over a 12-month period.

Career

Job roles associated with this qualification relate to the delivery of training and assessment within the vocational education and training sector.

You’ll be prepared to take on roles for experienced VET practitioners. This may include leading teacher roles or coordination or management roles in VET.

Graduates of this program are employed by a range of organisations including private registered training organisations (RTOs), government departments, schools, community organisations and large TAFE institutes.

Possible job titles and roles relevant to this qualification include:

  • leading other trainers and assessors
  • providing mentoring to new trainers and assessors
  • registered training organisation (RTO) advanced trainer and assessor
  • designing approaches to learning and assessment strategies
  • advanced vocational education teacher
  • VET in VCE or VCAL secondary school teacher.

Admissions

You need to satisfy all of the following academic (entry) requirements to be considered for entry into this course.

You should have:

  • A Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and vocational experience in training and assessment roles within an RTO or similar organisation where the focus has been on competency based training, or
  • Another relevant qualification and vocational experience in training and assessment roles within an RTO or similar organisation where the focus has been on competency based training and assessment, or
  • Extensive vocational experience in training and assessment roles within an RTO or similar organisation where the focus has been on competency based training and assessment.

You must:

  • be working in vocational education and training and
  • arrange for a suitably qualified and experienced teacher to supervise your teaching practicum.

There are no prerequisite subjects required for entry into this qualification.

A selection task is not required for entry into this qualification.

2023 fees

The tuition fees you will pay for this program will depend on whether you are offered a Victorian Government subsidised place or a full-fee place. To find out if you are eligible for a government subsidised place, follow the steps at How to check if you are eligible.

Eligibility Exemption criteria

**The Victorian Government is currently waiving three (3) eligibility criteria around prior qualifications. This means that more people who want to study a vocational education program at RMIT, and who have studied previously, will be able to access a government subsidised place in a program. Find out how to check your eligibility

Defer your payment

The Australian Government provides financial assistance via the VET Student Loans scheme, which allows eligible students in eligible programs to defer payment of their tuition fees, up to the maximum loan amount for their program.

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2023 is $326.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.

VET Student Loans

The Australian Government provides financial assistance via the VET Student Loans scheme, which allows eligible students in eligible programs to defer payment of their tuition fees, up to the maximum loan amount for their program.

How does a VET Student Loan work?

If your VET Student Loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT your tuition fees on your behalf, up to the maximum loan amount for your program.

Your VET Student Loan becomes part of your VETSL debt. You will start repaying your accumulated VETSL debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is adjusted each year (this also applies if you are still studying).

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.

The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology advises that:

  • VET student loans will not be approved for students who do not meet eligibility requirements; and
  • a VET student loan gives rise to a HELP debt that continues to be a debt due to the Commonwealth until it is repaid.

VET Student Loan cap

If your program is eligible for the VET Student Loan scheme and has a loan cap that doesn’t cover the total amount of the tuition fees for your program, then you’ll need to pay RMIT the difference by the due date once you exceed the cap.

It’s easy for you to keep track of your VET Student Loan debt, and you can choose to make upfront payments at any time before the census date.
