Dr Stephen Banham
Typographer, Graphic Designer, Writer, Lecturer and Curator. Stephen's primary research interest is typography – particularly the social and cultural readings of letterforms.
Professional profile
Stephen Banham has been involved in teaching and professional practice in graphic design and typography since 1991. The same year he founded Letterbox, an internationally renown typographic studio based in Melbourne. The studio work ranges from identities, publishing, exhibitions and signage systems right through to public art projects and books. Banham has also been involved in the writing and critique of the graphic design both in the design and mainstream media (radio, newspapers etc) both nationally and internationally.
The professional practice has included work for the Melbourne Recital Centre, The Australian Performing Arts Market, The Commonwealth Games Arts Festival, Venice Biennale, The Australia Council, Arts Victoria, Melbourne University Press, The City of Melbourne etc.

Coordinating typography across the undergraduate program within Communication Design. More specifically, current teaching includes the graduate diploma in Type and Identity (GRAP 2141), Publication Design (GRAP 2143), Typography In Design (GRAP 2277), Typo-Archaeology (Studio 4) as well as for the offshore student cohort at SIM (Singapore).
