Our labs have the latest industry standard equipment and there's ample opportunity for you to gain hands-on experience.
RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches, including face-to-face tutorials, practical laboratories, presentations and group discussions. You'll have access to online resources through the student portal.
You will be expected to purchase a laboratory coat, safety glasses, powder-free nitrile gloves, permanent marker and a scientific calculator. These items are available from the RMIT shop or other suppliers.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes tests, presentations, group projects, laboratory reports and demonstration of laboratory skills.
The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.
Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.
The world is constantly changing, and there are universal skills that can help you adapt to the evolving nature of work and global engagement.
As part of your study experience at RMIT, we provide 6 future-focused RMIT Capabilities:

This certificate has strong links with industry (including private and hospital pathology laboratories, biotechnology and research laboratories).
It features student/staff visits to laboratories and comprehensive input from the Industry Advisory Committee.
This course is competency-based and has been designed to help you develop the practical skills and knowledge necessary to work effectively in your chosen field. You will learn and be assessed by practising and demonstrating your capabilities, all of which can be readily applied in the workplace.
In addition to the specific vocational skills you build throughout this course, you will also develop a set of essential employability skills, including communication, planning, organising, and problem solving, self-management, initiative and teamwork. These foundational skills will enable you to navigate the world of work, collaborate effectively with others, and successfully get the job done.
This one-year qualification provides you with a foundation in chemistry, maths, biology, scientific communication, computing, biochemistry and occupational health and safety. You will also learn general laboratory skills such as microscopy, aseptic techniques, chemistry techniques and the use of laboratory instruments.
As a laboratory assistant/technician you will conduct routine laboratory tests in pathology, food, environmental, veterinarian, biotechnology and research laboratories. Working under supervision you will process and prepare samples for testing. You may perform chemical and biological analyses of human and environmental samples. You may also assist in performing experiments for research into biochemical or genetic processes.
In this certificate, you will complete four core subjects and 12 electives that will build strong foundational skills in laboratory techniques.
You'll develop core knowledge in:
In your electives, you'll undertake a broad range of study that will cover topics such as using laboratory application software and performing microscopic examinations, biological procedures, tissue cultures, food, histological and chemical tests.
