Students in a workshop in the Sustainability Space

Sustainability Space

We created the Sustainability Space (10.4.70) on Campus to engage with students, staff and the wider community by building a sense of place for sustainability and to facilitate workshops, talks and events.

Check the opening hours displayed in the space and please swing by, say hello and get to know the RMIT Sustainability Team. Our Sustainability Space is free for the RMIT community to book for any event, workshop or seminar that are sustainability related, just add the room via your Outlook Calendar, and the booking will be sent to the RMIT Sustainability Team to review.

Acts of Connection

RMIT has partnered with ACTS to deliver ‘Acts of Connection’ which is an online series of sustainability-themed ‘acts’ – be they engagement events, activities, shared learning opportunities, competitions or networking events – aimed at connecting a community of passionate individuals who want to learn more about sustainability and find out what they can do to help make the world a better place.

Accessible to all RMIT students and staff the series provides a platform for individuals to:

  • Increase their knowledge and awareness of important sustainability issues
  • Help create and connect with a supportive community of likeminded people
  • Learn simple yet effective ways to help build a better future for people and the planet

The weekly email bulletin will provide you with details on upcoming events and activities, simply sign up with your RMIT email address for more information.

Living Labs

In line with RMIT’s objective to provide real-world experiences, drive industry connections and encourage sustainability engagement outside the classroom, the Sustainability Team support a range of 'Living Lab' projects which leverage the campus as a learning tool.

Find out more and watch the video on the Living Labs web page.

Events

We deliver an annual calendar of sustainability events aligned with our Engagement Plan to:

  • Showcase and embed RMIT’s sustainability commitments through targeted events and campaigns
  • Increase the visibility and accessibility of the Sustainability team via face‑to‑face engagement, curated sustainability spaces and digital outreach

Example events include:

  • Sustainability Week
    • Sustainability Week is held each September and aligns with Green Campus Day as well as other key environmental dates. The program includes practical skill‑building workshops, thought‑provoking sessions led by RMIT academics and industry experts, and guided tours showcasing sustainability features across our campuses. Our Student Sustainability Ambassadors help shape the program and drive strong engagement through hands‑on, student‑led activities such as DIY workshops and clothes swaps.
  • Plastic Free July
    • Plastic Free July is a global movement to reduce plastic pollution for cleaner streets, oceans and communities. Each year, RMIT hosts events and workshops that promote reusing, refusing and reducing single-use plastics.
  • Citizen Science events
    • Our Citizen Science activities invite students and staff to explore RMIT’s outdoor spaces, connect with like‑minded people and learn how to record flora, fauna and fungi across our campuses. These observations help build our biodiversity baseline and inform future action.
  • University-wide events
    • We also take part in RMIT Orientation Week and Open Day to showcase our sustainability commitments from the very start of the student journey. By embedding sustainability early, we help new and prospective students understand that it is front and centre of the RMIT experience.
