About

Dr Michael Hartup is a Lecturer in the Youth Work Program within the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies.

Michael is a researcher, educator, and audio-maker based in Melbourne, Australia. Michael’s research focuses on young people’s experiences of mental illness, participation in creative practice, popular culture studies, and vulnerability and resilience studies. This work has been conducted across both the not-for-profit and tertiary sector. His doctoral thesis addressed the ways in which young musicians used the practice of music-making to engage with and tell stories of personal vulnerability. His most recent publication is a book chapter co-authored with Dr Eve Mayes in 2021, appearing in the edited collection *New Perspectives on Education for Democracy’,* published by Taylor & Francis.

Michael has been teaching at RMIT since 2020 and has taught and coordinated a range of courses as part of the Bachelor of Youth Work and Youth Studies program.
