Zahirul Hoque (PhD, FCPA, FCMA) is a professor of accounting in the School of Accounting, Information Systems, and Supply Chain at RMIT University in Australia and a Deputy Head of the Department of Accounting and Financial Planning. Before joining RMIT on January 20, 2025, he was a full professor at Prince Sultan University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (2021-2024), La Trobe University, Australia (2006-2021), Deakin University, Australia (2005 and 2006), and Charles Darwin University, Australia (2003 and 2004). He also held positions at Griffith University as a senior lecturer in accounting (1996-2003), at Victoria University of Wellington as a lecturer in accounting (1994-1996), at the University of Manchester as a teaching assistant (1993), and at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, as a lecturer (1986-1993).
He was Executive Director of the Centre for Public Sector Governance, Accountability & Performance at La Trobe University from 2011 to 2020. He was also the Associate Dean of Research in the former Faculty of Law and Management at La Trobe University from February 2009 through to June 2010.
He obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester, UK, in 1993. He is a Fellow of CPA Australia and the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh.
He supervised 22 doctoral students as a principal supervisor and several Honors/Master's students.
He is the Founding Editor of the Journal of Accounting & Organizational Change, a Deputy Editor of Accounting and Finance, and a Joint Editor of Emerald Studies in Public Service Accounting and Accountability. He is also on the editorial board of Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, the British Accounting Review, Financial Accountability & Management, Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management, and Journal of Public Budgeting, Accounting & Financial Management.
His research interests include management accounting and control systems in organizations, public sector accounting, accounting and organizational change, accounting in emerging economies, and qualitative research in accounting. He has published over 100 articles and book chapters in prestigious journals, including Accounting, Organizations and Society, the British Accounting Review, Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, Management Accounting Research, Journal of Management Accounting Research, Accounting and Finance, Accounting and Business Research, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, Advances in Management Accounting, Advances in Accounting, Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management, and Behavioral Research in Accounting.
His work has been highly cited, with over 12,000 citations and an h-index of 44, as shown in his Google Scholar profile. Additionally, he has a track record of delivering keynote speeches at both local and international educational conferences and professional forums.
In 2015, while at La Trobe University, he led the implementation of the Blended Delivery Framework across all eight core undergraduate accounting subjects. This strategic initiative effectively provided high-quality teaching and learning for students. The University acknowledged his such achievement with the Vice-Chancellor's Highly Commendation Award 2016.
In 2022, while working at Prince Sultan University, he was honored to receive the Exemplary Moodle (LMS) Award for his efforts to improve students' learning experience. The award recognizes outstanding Moodle resources that positively engage students and reflect innovative learning designs across the faculty.
He has a proven track record of securing external funding from various professional and academic funding agencies. He was awarded an ARC (Australian Research Council) Discovery Projects grant for funding starting in 2012. He was a co-chief investigator of a well-funded research team from QUT for the project "Cost-Aware Business Process Management." The project focused on analyzing, evaluating, and improving current approaches to managing costs associated with business processes.
He possesses vast knowledge and experience in research and innovation policy at both national and University levels. Over the past 15 years, he has actively participated as an assessor of external research grant applications (Discovery Research Grants) for the Australian Research Council.
Zahirul is committed to continuing this approach in any future role, ensuring that strategic objectives are met through informed actions that deliver tangible results.
My primary teaching areas include Introductory Financial Accounting, Management Accounting (foundational and advanced), and Research Philosophy and Management.
