Dr Zahirul Hoque joined RMIT University on 20 January 2025 as a Professor of Accounting in the School of Accounting, Information Systems and Supply Chain, after serving Prince Sultan University in Saudi Arabia for three and a half years as a Professor of Business (Accounting). Before these, his professorial positions were at La Trobe University (2006-2021), Deakin University (2005 and 2006), and Charles Darwin University (2003 and 2004). He was a senior lecturer at Griffith University - Gold Coast Campus (1996-2002), a lecturer in accounting at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand (1994 - 1996), and a lecturer in accounting at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
He obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester, UK 1993. He is a Fellow of CPA Australia and the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh.
His research interests include management accounting and control systems in organizations, public sector accounting, accounting and organizational change, accounting in emerging economies, and qualitative research in accounting. He supervised 21 doctoral students and several Hons/Masters students.
He is the Founding Editor of the Journal of Accounting & Organizational Change, Deputy Editor of Accounting and Finance, and the Joint Editor of Emerald Studies in Public Service Accounting and Accountability. He is also on the editorial board of Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, the British Accounting Review, Financial Accountability & Management, Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management, and Journal of Public Budgeting, Accounting & Financial Management. He is committed to delivering a life-long learning experience for students focusing on accounting in its socio-political and organizational contexts. He has published over 100 articles and book chapters in prestigious journals, including Accounting, Organizations and Society, the British Accounting Review, Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, Management Accounting Research, Journal of Management Accounting Research, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, Advances in Management Accounting, Advances in Accounting, and Behavioral Research in Accounting.
My primary teaching areas include Introductory Financial Accounting, Management Accounting (foundational and advanced), and Research Philosophy and Management.
