Hugh’s research explores how urban planning can better address the environmental challenges facing contemporary cities. Combining geospatial analysis with a focus on governance and decision-making, his work examines the forces shaping urban development and how they can be redirected toward more sustainable outcomes. Currently, Hugh is investigating the impacts of urban densification, particularly how it contributes to rising temperatures and declining liveability in cities, and how more informed planning decisions can help mitigate these effects.
