Dr Malindu Sandanayake is an Associate Professor in the Civil and Infrastructure Engineering at RMIT University and a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) with Engineers Australia. With a strong focus on sustainability and innovation in construction, Malindu brings both academic insight and industry relevance to his work. Before joining RMIT University he was an Associate Professor at Built Enviornment and Engineering at Victoria University. Over the years, he has led and contributed to numerous impactful research projects, including state-funded initiatives on the digital transformation of the construction industry and social value creation in infrastructure collectively attracting over $2.5 million in funding.
Malindu’s expertise spans sustainable materials, life cycle assessment, green construction, BIM, smart technologies, and circular economy applications in the built environment. His contributions have earned him multiple Sustainability Victoria grants and recognition such as being a finalist for RMIT’s Research Impact Award and receiving the 2022 Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability at Victoria University.
A prolific researcher, he has published widely in high-impact journals, book chapters, and conferences. He’s also a passionate supervisor and mentor, guiding emerging researchers in areas like BIM, sustainable construction practices, waste-to-value innovation, and smart infrastructure.
In the classroom, Malindu is deeply engaged in teaching the next generation of construction professionals, covering subjects such as construction management, high-rise construction, BIM, construction engineering, and research methods. He is also a sought-after keynote speaker and workshop facilitator in both academic and professional settings.
