About

Dr. César Sánchez Huertas leads the Bioanalytical Applications Team at the Integrated Photonics and Applications Centre (InPAC) at RMIT University, Australia. As a nano-biotechnologist, he specializes in lab-on-a-chip technologies that integrate photonics and microfluidics. His team develops biomedical lab-on-a-chip devices capable of analyzing biomarkers—from DNA and RNA to proteins and cells—to reflect the body’s internal state. Their work primarily focuses on immunology, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. He is dedicated to advancing photonic biosensor detection through sophisticated signal processing techniques and pushing the limits of biomedical analysis with innovative microfluidic devices. His team integrates these technologies into compact, versatile lab-on-a-chip devices. He is also a committed supervisor and mentor, fostering a community of researchers in the lab-on-a-chip and MedTech fields. Collaborating with engineers, biomedical groups, clinicians, and industry, César aims to develop diagnostic and biomedical devices that are user-friendly, instantaneous, and portable. In 2021, he co-founded HatiSens Pty Ltd, a medical technology startup focused on improving the efficiency of heart attack diagnostics. To date, his team has secured over AUD $1 million in competitive funding and more than AUD $500k in private industry-led funding.

Teaching interests

In my teaching career at RMIT University, Australia, I have had the privilege of contributing to the education of future engineers and scientists through various courses and mentorship programs. I taught "The Professional Scientist" (ONPS2335) in 2022, and "Research Methods for Engineers" (EEET2449), along with "Sensors and Measurement Technologies" (EEET1464 & EEET1413) from 2019 to 2021. 

 

I have supervised 11 Higher Degree Research (HDR) students, including serving as Senior Supervisor for three of those students, with four completing their degrees under my guidance, one of which I oversaw as the Senior Supervisor. Additionally, I have actively participated in nine Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) placement programs focused on Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology, and co-supervised four international cotutelle programs, collaborating with esteemed institutions and professionals across Europe, including the Marie Curie Cofund ECLAUSion Program and the RMIT European Doctoral Innovators (REDI) program, and India (AcSIR-RMIT and BITS-RMIT Cotutelle Programs).

 

Beyond formal teaching, I served as a mentor within multiple Master’s programs at RMIT and contributed to mentoring at Melbourne University’s Biotech Futures 2024. Under my guidance, students have achieved numerous accolades, including prominent awards at competitive events such as the Biotech Futures and the 'Most Innovative Project' at the Health, Science, and Technology Networking symposium, highlighting the success and innovation fostered in my supervision and mentorship.
