PhD scholarship in Thermochemical Activation of Mining and Organic Waste for Low-Carbon Cementitious Materials

A four year scholarship package totalling approximately $48,000 per annum tax exempt (2026 rate).

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a background in civil, materials, or chemical engineering, or a related discipline. Knowledge of concrete technology, construction materials, or sustainable materials is highly desirable.

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Be an Australian citizen or a Permanent Resident, or a New Zealand citizen.
  • Meet participating university PhD admission requirements.
  • Meet university English language requirements.
  • Not having previously completed a PhD. 
  • Be able to commence the Program in the year of the offer.
  • Enrol as a full-time PhD student.

Part-time arrangements may be considered if approved by the supervisory team and in accordance with university policy. 

  • Be prepared to be located at the project location(s) that the host university has approved and, if required, comply with the host university's external enrolment procedures.   
  • Be prepared to undergo onboarding to CSIRO, which will include passing mandatory government background checks (allow for between 4 to 8 weeks) and complete any other CSIRO requirements.

  • Applicants are required to submit an expression of interest (EOI) by contacting supervisor Mohammad Saberian (mohammad.saberian@rmit.edu.au)
  • The EOI is assessed by the supervisory team and shortlisted applicants are interviewed.
  • The supervisory team nominates a preferred applicant and informs iPhD office.
  • The nominated applicant will be instructed to apply.
  • The application is then assessed by the host university against PhD admission criteria.
  • The university will issue a letter of offer for the program if all conditions have been satisfied.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong interest in low-carbon materials, circular economy, and waste valorisation. Experience in laboratory testing, material characterisation techniques (e.g., mechanical testing, microstructural analysis), or data analysis will be advantageous.
