PhD Scholarship in synthesis and electrochemical investigation of Gold and Platinum Complexes with Unusual Oxidation States for Therapeutic Applications (Chemistry).

This project will develop redox-active gold and platinum complexes with controlled oxidation states for next-generation cancer therapeutics.

The scholarship will fund a 3-year PhD candidature to work in the Chemistry Department of the School of Science.

The value of the scholarship is equivalent to a standard RMIT Scholarship. This scholarship will be available for up to 3 Years with an extension to 3.5 years if required.

Applicants need to have a background in synthetic organometallic chemistry and electrochemistry, with some interest in medicinal chemistry. They must have completed a relevant Bachelor's Degree and Honours or Master's in synthetic inorganic chemistry/medicinal/pharmacology. The applicant should have experience in air-sensitive chemistry and some experience in synthetic organic chemistry.

The successful candidate will undertake an interdisciplinary PhD project at the interface of chemistry and electrochemistry, focusing on the synthesis and investigation of gold and platinum complexes for therapeutic applications. The project will involve synthetic inorganic and organometallic chemistry, electrochemical techniques, and advanced characterisation methods to understand the relationships among molecular structure, redox behaviour, and function.

Desirable criteria:

  • A strong background in chemistry, particularly synthetic inorganic, organometallic or electrochemistry.
  • Experience with laboratory-based chemical synthesis and general analytical techniques (e.g. NMR, UV–Vis, FTIR and mass spectrometry).-An interest in electrochemistry and redox processes.
  • Experience with air-sensitive techniques is desirable but not essential.-Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary research environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Interest in and ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting, including with scientists and/or engineers
