Discover biomedical sciences

Where science meets health

Biomedical sciences help us understand disease, how it occurs, what happens, and how we can control, cure, and prevent it. This cross-disciplinary field is where science disciplines focus primarily on the biology of human health and disease. It includes specialised study areas such as laboratory medicine, pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy.

Shared foundational understanding

RMIT's undergraduate biomedical sciences degrees include first-year foundational subjects, designed to help you learn the fundamentals of human anatomy and physiology, as well as develop your communication and professional skills. They also introduce you to factors that impact the health of individuals, particularly our First Nations people. This shared foundational understanding gives you the skills to pursue a broad range of careers and makes it easy for you to transfer into another course in health or biomedical sciences.

Industry connections

Co-designed with industry

RMIT maintains strong links with industry to ensure our programs are relevant and meet the needs of industry, government and the community.

All of our biomedical science courses are co-designed with industry to prepare you to work anywhere in diagnostic pathology, medical research pharmacy, laboratory medicine, pharmaceutical sciences and biomedical research.

Students have been placed at major teaching hospitals, including Royal Children's, Peter MacCallum, Osteon Health, and private laboratories. These placements include microbiology, haematology, biochemistry and blood banking.

Projects that have a real impact

Working closely with industry and medical specialists, RMIT researchers successfully developed Australia’s first 3D-printed spinal implant, providing relief to a patient suffering from severe back pain due to a rare spinal defect.

RMIT is also a key partner in BioFab3D@ACMD, Australia's first robotics and biomedical engineering centre embedded within a hospital. This collaborative partnership has enabled RMIT to remain at the forefront of the 3D bioprinting revolution and continue to make an impact, with researchers working on new biofabricated technologies to repair deteriorating bone in older people, developing a customised, self-regulating artificial pancreas for people with diabetes and building replacement muscle for trauma patients.
