RMIT’s Master of Professional Accounting (CPA Australia Extension) is a professionally accredited course delivered in partnership with CPA Australia.
The distinctive structure of this course aligns the content of six of its 16 subjects with the content of six subjects within the CPA Program™ conducted by CPA Australia. By enrolling in RMIT’s Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) (CPA Australia Extension), you can achieve a masters degree and the academic component of the CPA designation concurrently.
Subjects in the MPA (CPA Australia Extension) program are delivered by leading academics, many of whom have been involved in the design, writing and/or examination of CPA Program™ subjects.
The MPA (CPA Australia Extension) offers you an opportunity to focus on the dynamics of strategy, leadership, and international business and contemporary issues in risk management, forensic accounting and sustainability. An additional feature is the focus on work-integrated-learning activities in which students integrate academic learning with practical workplace experiences such as projects with industry and community-based organisations.
At the conclusion of this degree, you will appreciate accounting as a technical and social practice and emerge with the confidence, skills, capabilities and accounting know-how to apply your learned theories to solve technical challenges and accounting problems.
If you don't wish to pursue full membership with CPA Australia, you may wish to consider the Master of Professional Accounting.
RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations andgroup discussions.
Through RMIT University’s online learning portal, myRMIT, you will be able to view online resources and learning activities created by lecturers, access course materials via Blackboard, collaborate with lecturers and fellow students, and access your student email account.
Educational software, Canvas, other online and digital resources and printers are accessible on campus via the RMIT wireless network using your own laptop, tablet or smart phone or via computer facilities on-campus. You will be able to access the same software from home using myDesktop.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester may include examinations, essays, reports, presentations, group projects, research projects, quizzes and tests, blog journals and practical assignments.
CPA Program™ subjects (CPA courses)
The materials used in these courses will be a combination of the study materials and online resources CPA Australia provides to applicants in its CPA Program™ and materials prepared by the RMIT School of Accounting.
You will undertake examinations in the CPA Program™ subjects in addition to ongoing assessment in the related Master of Professional Accounting course.
RMIT is a Registered Tuition Provider – Category B for the CPA Program™.
Business practitioners, lecturers from industry, guest speakers and industry-relevant projects underpin the work integrated learning components of this course. An industry advisory board ensures current standards and practice are reflected in this course.
As part of the course, you will have an opportunity to apply your academic skills to a work-based context in the core subject Strategic Management Control Systems. In other subjects, the practical application of theoretical concepts will be achieved through activities such as case studies, projects and assignments. These opportunities to integrate academic learning with practical workplace experiences can give you an edge when you’re ready to start your career.

This masters degree comprises 16 core accounting subjects.

You will complete RMIT accounting subjects in the first part of the course, followed by the Business Research Design subject later in the course where you will explore complex and ambiguous problems, and test and evaluate potential solutions to demonstrate your discipline knowledge and your understanding of relevant research methodology.
The course includes six CPA Program™ professional level segments (CPA subjects). To successfully complete the CPA Program™ you will need to undertake all specified subjects and assessment including the CPA Program™ examinations.
It is recommended that you follow the sequence of subjects presented in the enrolment structure.
RMIT students will receive high-level academic support and guidance by leading professors, many of whom have played a role in the development of the CPA Program™ subjects.

Entry requirements
To study this program you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:
- IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)
- TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 79 (with minimum of 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing)
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 58 (with no communication band less than 50)
- Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

When you successfully complete the RMIT Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting you are guaranteed entry into the Master of Professional Accounting (CPA Australia Extension) with 1 semester of advanced standing (equivalent to 48 credit points).
Eligibility for advanced standing is assessed on a case by case basis.

Full-fee places: AU$30,720.

Annual fee adjustment
Amounts quoted are indicative fees per annum, and are based on a standard year of full-time study (96 credit points). A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load.
Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and these fees should only be used as a guide.
Defer your payment
This program is offered on a full-fee paying basis only. If you are offered a place, you will need to pay the full tuition costs of your program. However, eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) may apply to defer payment of some or all of their tuition fees via the Commonwealth Government’s FEE-HELP loan scheme.

Eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) may apply to defer payment of some or all of their tuition fees via the Commonwealth Government’s FEE-HELP loan scheme.
How does a HELP loan work?
If your FEE-HELP and/or SA-HELP loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT, on your behalf, up to 100% of your fees. This amount will become part of your accumulated HELP debt.
You only start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is set each year by the Australian Government (this also applies if you are still studying). The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.

This program is approved for income support.
You may be eligible for student income support payments from the Commonwealth Government if you are undertaking a graduate certificate, graduate diploma or an approved professionally oriented masters by coursework program. For more information see Income support for Masters students.

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student. The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2021 is $313.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.
The annual tuition fee for 2021 is AU$40,320.
The total indicative tuition fee for 2021 commencement is AU$82,560.
In addition to tuition fees you also need to pay for:
- Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) in each calendar year.
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) - Student visa holders must have cover for the total duration of their visa.
- Some programs incur additional expenses.
