Learn the English skills you need to take part in further study at RMIT or other Australian institutions with our English as a second language (EAL) courses.
This program is designed for students from a non-English speaking background who are looking to develop academic language skills to complete further study in Australia.

This program will prepare you with the essential academic skills needed in essay and report writing, presentations, group work, research and organisation.

Why study your Certificate III EAL (Further Studies) at RMIT?
This program provides support beyond the classroom with weekly career and pathways workshops. These workshops will help you research your options, plan your future and apply for further study programs at TAFE and university.
Details
You will learn through a hands on approach including classroom activities, giving oral presentations and participating in group projects.
All programs are delivered in English.
You will have access to online resources through the myRMIT student portal.
Assessment will take place throughout the program.
16 weeks full-time
The Certificate III in EAL (Further Study) is offered in semester 1 and 2 of each year.
Before you start this program, you will attend an interview and an assessment of your language skills. This will determine which certificate is most suitable for your current level of English.
You can expect to study 560 hours over the 18 weeks of this program.
You'll complete core and elective courses. Core courses include:
- introduction to oral presentations
- taking notes
- introduction to texts for research purposes
- language learning skills
- analysing texts
- discussion in a further study context.
Elective courses include:
- Investigating Issues in the Australian Environment
- Producing text documents.

- have literacy and numeracy skills to level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF)

Fees
The tuition fees you will pay for this program will depend on whether you are offered a Victorian Government subsidised place or a full-fee place.

The student tuition fees as displayed by the fee finder are indicative only and subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and these fees should only be used as a guide. Learn more about fees for vocational study.
You may be entitled to apply for a fee concession or exemption if you are in a Victorian Government subsidised place and you meet the eligibility criteria.
If your application for a fee concession is approved, you will be charged 20% of the standard government subsidised tuition fee for your program. You will also be charged a lower rate on your student services and amenities fee (SSAF).
In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.
The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2019 is $303.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.
In addition to tuition fees you also need to pay for:
- Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) in each calendar year.
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) - Student visa holders must have cover for the total duration of their visa.
- Some programs incur additional expenses.
