Overview
Get registered as a licensed builder in as little as six months via this fast tracked program geared towards people with at least three years’ experience in the building industry.
This program is geared towards people with at least three years’ experience in the building industry looking to attain formal registration as a builder. In it, you'll examine the principles, techniques, and regulations of the building and construction industry primarily related to residential construction.
This program is offered in a blended teaching model via workshops and tutorials and is recognised by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA), the registration body for builders in Victoria.

Each cluster in this program includes at least one workshop, involving industry speakers and facilitation. You’ll also have access to ongoing online and face-to-face tutorial support.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments and quizzes depending on which cluster you are currently completing.
RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including seminars, workshops, presentations, and group discussions. You'll have access to online resources through the myRMIT student portal.
Your assessment will be based on either real or simulated industry issues and scenarios.
Throughout the program, you will have the opportunity to engage with professional industry speakers from a variety of organisations and contexts.
This program offers learning clustered into specialised clusters.
Each cluster is entirely independent of the others and clusters can be completed in any order. This allows students to enter the program at any stage of the year rather than waiting for formal intakes.

Career
On completion of this program, you will be eligible for registration as a licensed builder with the VBA.
You may then find roles including:
- building construction,
- supervision and management
- estimating
- purchasing
- contracts administration.
You may also find employment in related fields, either on a building site or in a head office environment.
You may also start your own business.
This program is currently recognised as a learning pathway for domestic builder registration through the VBA, subject to meeting their licencing, knowledge, and application requirements.
On completion of this program you may apply to the VBA to be granted qualifications as a Registered Building Practitioner (domestic builder and/or commercial builder). This is subject to you meeting their application requirements.

The Victorian State Government has announced that from January 2019, that they will waive the tuition fee of 30 priority courses and 18 pre-apprenticeship courses at TAFE institutes, which includes this program.
This fee waiver will only be available for eligible students who will commence one of these qualifications in 2019.

The tuition fees you will pay for this program will depend on whether you are offered a Victorian Government subsidised place or a full-fee place.

You may be entitled to apply for a fee concession or exemption if you are in a Victorian Government subsidised place and you meet the eligibility criteria.
If your application for a fee concession is approved, you will be charged 20% of the standard government subsidised tuition fee for your program. You will also be charged a lower rate on your student services and amenities fee (SSAF).
In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.
The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2019 is $303.
