Overview

A recent McKinsey report forecast that Al will generate $13 trillion in economic activity by 2030. It’s the ideal time to gain expertise in this burgeoning and complex field.

In the Master of Artificial Intelligence, you’ll learn to design and implement systems and applications in high-tech facilities, such as our newly developed Artificial Intelligence Lab.

The Master of Artificial Intelligence offers two stream options. In the project stream, you complete an AI postgraduate project and choose two electives from both AI and IT. In the research stream, you complete a research methods module, write a minor thesis, and select two electives.

We have been rated above world standard for our research in the field of AI and Image Processing. This course is among the most specialised in the country, with few other degrees focused on AI theory and applications in today’s climate. Curious and motivated students will develop advanced knowledge, placing them ahead of the pack for practical careers or research in AI.

In this rigorous and challenging course, you’ll explore practical components of developing AI apps and platforms and understand the role that ethics and social responsibility play in the future of technology. 

Students with a proficient background in mathematics will thrive, as this degree requires strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

The course contains a broad mix of study modes, including lectures, tutorials, practical classes, studios, project work and seminars, using face-to-face, online, intensive and other flexible delivery mechanisms.

Assessment is designed to give you opportunities to demonstrate your capabilities. You will find that the forms of assessment used may be different for each course, depending on the course objectives and learning outcomes.

Your assessment in this course may include in-class programming challenges, assignments and projects, reflective journals, assessed tutorials or presentations, self-assessment, and peer assessment.

Those who wish to exit the degree at graduate diploma level can do so after two semesters, or else transfer into the Master of Information Technology.

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

The School of Computing Technologies has substantial links with the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry, both in Australia and internationally.

Employers and industry professionals are members of our Industry Advisory Committee and contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of this degree. Their involvement ensures that this degree remains relevant to your needs, as well as the needs of employers. Industry also contributes to this degree through participation in seminars, industry awards and scholarships.

Many of the teaching staff are practising (or have been) professionals with extensive industry experience and contact networks. This experience, when integrated into teaching and learning practice, enriches your learning environment.

In your first year, you will undertake six fundamental subjects, and choose two electives. 

Students with a Bachelor of Computer Science or Bachelor of Information Technology may be eligible for advanced standing of up to one semester.

In the second year, students will choose between a project stream, or a research option:

  • Research students will complete a research methods module and a minor thesis
  • Project students will complete an AI PG project and choose an additional AI elective and an IT elective.

Career

This master's degree provides breadth of high-level computing knowledge and depth in the design and implementation of AI systems.

In this era of rapid technological change, AI is increasingly being used to drive decision-making, economic growth, public policy and corporate strategy.

This degree will prepare you for a career as an AI professional in this continually-expanding area. You will be able to apply advanced AI knowledge in a range of contexts for professional practice or scholarship, and as a pathway for further learning.

Job titles for AI professionals are very diverse and may include: AI engineer, machine learning engineer, business intelligence developer, research scientist and web analyst.

The Master of Artificial Intelligence is conditionally provisionally accredited at a professional level by the Australian Computer Society, which accredits Information and Communication Technology related programs that are offered by Australian universities, both onshore and offshore.

Admissions

You need to satisfy all of the following entry requirements to be considered for entry into this degree.

An Australian Bachelor degree or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 out of 4.0 (equivalent to at least a credit average), in computing, science, engineering, health or statistics.

OR

You may also be considered if you have an Australian bachelor degree with a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent and; relevant completed courses in programming and statistics in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree or a minimum three years’ of current, relevant work experience or professional practice as a programmer, statistician or equivalent..

If you wish to have industry or employment experience assessed as part of meeting the entry requirements you will need to provide a detailed CV/resume listing previous positions, dates of employment and position responsibilities; a statement from your employer confirming these details (or contact details of employer so RMIT can seek confirmation); and evidence of any relevant professional development undertaken.

There are no prerequisite subjects required for entry into this qualification.

A selection task is not required for entry into this qualification.

You must meet the University's minimum English language requirements to be eligible for a place in this program.

To study this course you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:

  • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)
  • TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 79 (with minimum of 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 58 (with no communication band less than 50)
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

Pathways

You can gain entry to this masters degree from a range of RMIT undergraduate programs, if you meet the entry requirements.

Applicants with relevant studies in computer science, information technology, software engineering, data science, analytics or statistics will be eligible for between 48 - 96 credit points of exemptions. 

Students with relevant undergraduate studies in computer science, information technology, software engineering, and/or statistics will be given up to one semester (48 credit points) of advanced standing.

Students who have successfully completed BP094 Bachelor of Computer Science or BP096 Bachelor of Software Engineering degree from RMIT University will be granted 48 credit points of advanced standing. For all other students, advanced standing and exemptions will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Credit and recognition of prior learning

Credit, recognition of prior learning, professional experience and accreditation from a professional body can reduce the duration of your study by acknowledging your earlier, relevant experience.

Credit and exemptions will be assessed consistent with the principles of the RMIT Credit Policy.

Upon successful completion of this program you may be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University, including MR221 Master of Computer Science (Research) and DR221 PhD in Computer Science, subject to each program's entry requirements.

You can gain entry into this degree from a range of RMIT undergraduate programs.

Master Advanced Standing

Students with relevant undergraduate studies in computer science, information technology, software engineering, and/or statistics will be given up to one semester (48 credit points) of advanced standing.

Students who have successfully completed BP094 Bachelor of Computer Science or BP096 Bachelor of Software Engineering degree from RMIT University will be granted 48 credit points of advanced standing. For all other students, advanced standing and exemptions will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Credits

Applicants with a bachelor honours degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma or masters degree qualification majoring in a different discipline may also be eligible for credit transfer of up to 48 credit points (equivalent to one semester full time study).

  • Full-fee places: AU$33,600 (2024 annual fee)*.

Annual fee adjustment*

Amounts quoted are indicative fees per annum, and are based on a standard year of full-time study (96 credit points). A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load.

*Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and these fees should only be used as a guide.

Defer your payment

This program is offered on a full-fee paying basis only. If you are offered a place, you will need to pay the full tuition costs of your program. However, eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) may apply to defer payment of some or all of their tuition fees via the Commonwealth Government’s FEE-HELP loan scheme.

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2024 is $351.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.

FEE-HELP loans

Eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) may apply to defer payment of some or all of their tuition fees via the Commonwealth Government’s FEE-HELP loan scheme.

SA-HELP Loans

You may be eligible to apply to defer payment of the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) through the SA-HELP loan scheme. If you use SA-HELP, the amount will be added to your accumulated HELP debt.

How does a HELP loan work?

If your FEE-HELP and/or SA-HELP loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT, on your behalf, up to 100% of your fees. This amount will become part of your accumulated HELP debt.

You only start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is set each year by the Australian Government (this also applies if you are still studying). The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.
