Get ready for a fulfilling career in chemical engineering and pharmaceutical sciences.

As the pharmaceutical industry expands in Australia and world-wide, your understanding of the engineering process and other scientific fields involved in drug development and production, will ensure you’re well equipped to work across a range of roles.

You’ll gain a thorough understanding of the principles of chemical engineering and pharmaceutical sciences, allowing you to apply your knowledge to large scale production in the pharmaceutical industry.

You’ll have the opportunity to design creative solutions through inspiring and sustainable design-and-build projects, as well as taking part in the Engineers Without Borders Challenge — a humanitarian-focused course offered in all RMIT engineering degrees.

To ensure you graduate job-ready, you’ll also have an opportunity to undertake a work-integrated learning (industry experience) elective.

Learning and teaching

RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, workshops, presentations, group discussions, and syndicate work.

You'll have access to online resources through various student systems, including Canvas, the University’s Learning Management System.

Assessment methods

Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes exams, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects, and practical assignments.

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

The School of Engineering and the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences have extensive links with industry through their Industry Advisory Committees, research projects and consulting services.

Membership of these Committees includes practising engineers or external members drawn from a diverse industry base and institutions. Their involvement ensures that the course remains relevant to graduate and employers by providing feedback on the currency of the courses and the changing needs of industry.

They also contribute significantly through input into the design of new courses.

Global work, exchange and study experiences

RMIT offers a range of opportunities for our students to study abroad through global work, exchange and study experiences with over 165 partner universities worldwide.

This program is taught predominantly at the City campus. Students may have to travel to the Bundoora campus for laboratory, WIL and/or capstone project work.

This course builds on your chemistry, biochemistry and mathematics knowledge so that you understand the process of operating and designing chemical plants with an emphasis on how this may be applied and has relevance in the pharmaceutical industry.

Year 1

Majority of first year subjects are completed by all engineering students encompassing general science, mathematics and computer aided design. In the BH122 program you will also expand your knowledge in chemistry and biology. In the second semester you are introduced to chemical engineering and the role of chemical engineers in different industry sectors and society.

All engineering students will also study a Professional Engineering Practice course, incorporating a humanitarian-focused Engineers Without Borders Challenge. You’ll have the opportunity to extend this aspect of your studies by completing an Engineers Without Borders elective, enabling you to experience humanitarian engineering first-hand.

Year 2

You are introduced to the fundamentals of chemical engineering (mass and energy balances) and the design of chemical processes. You’ll develop your knowledge of core chemical engineering areas such as reaction engineering and heat transfer. You are introduced to fundamental knowledge on biochemistry and microbiology.

Year 3

Your core chemical engineering learning in thermodynamics, fluid flow and chemical engineering principles continues. You are introduced to the principles of pharmacology.

Years 4 and 5

You’ll hone your skills in environmental, safety and economic analysis of processes, design of process equipment, and control schemes. Your core chemical engineering skills are now consolidated and applied in major process design and research projects. You extend your knowledge of biochemistry and pharmacology to drug regulations and testing.

Your final-year (capstone) project will develop and reinforce the skills and knowledge you need - as defined by Engineers Australia - to commence your professional engineering career. You may have the opportunity to present your project at EnGenius, an end of year student showcase event.

You’ll also complete a work-integrated learning (industry experience) elective in Year 2, 3 or 4.

2024 indicative fees

In 2024, the annual student contribution amount (tuition fee) you will pay for a standard year of full-time study is between AU$4,445 to AU$16,323*.

Additional expenses

  • Student services and amenities fee (SSAF): AU$351 maximum fee for 2024.
  • Other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment.

Annual fee adjustment

Amounts quoted are indicative fees per annum, and are based on a standard year of full-time study (96 credit points). A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load.

Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and these fees should only be used as a guide.

Defer your payment

You may be eligible to apply for a HECS-HELP loan, which can be used to defer payment of up to the full amount of your student contribution fees. You may also be eligible to apply to defer payment of your SSAF through the SA-HELP loan scheme.

HECS-HELP Loans

The Australian Government provides financial assistance via the HECS-HELP loan scheme, which allows eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) to defer payment of up to the full amount of their student contribution.

SA-HELP Loans

You may be eligible to apply to defer payment of the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) through the SA-HELP loan scheme. If you use SA-HELP, the amount will be added to your accumulated HELP debt.

How does a HELP loan work?

If your FEE-HELP and/or SA-HELP loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT, on your behalf, up to 100% of your fees. This amount will become part of your accumulated HELP debt.

You only start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is set each year by the Australian Government (this also applies if you are still studying). The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2024 is $351.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.
