Overview

Play a vital role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease, and work alongside doctors, pathologists and scientists in the healthcare field.

RMIT's Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) will equip you with fundamental knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, develop your communication and professional skills and introduce you to factors that impact the health of individuals and communities, particularly our First Nations peoples.

You'll build skills and knowledge of molecular diagnostics which will provide an overview of the detection and application of biochemical and molecular biology techniques (DNA or RNA) to provide clinical information in the study of human diseases, including infectious disease, inherited conditions and cancer.

You'll also learn about clinical immunology and pathology, gaining an understanding of the diagnosis and management of patients with diseases or disease processes that result from disturbed immunological or pathophysiological mechanisms.

As a graduate of this laboratory medicine degree, you'll be qualified to practise as a medical scientist in the diagnostic pathology industry, be competitive for employment in medical research and be competitive for entry into PhD studies.

What is laboratory medicine?

Laboratory medicine is the science of pathology — detecting and diagnosing disease.

It involves analysing samples and conducting tests using body tissues (e.g. biopsies) and fluids (e.g. blood) to diagnose diseases, enable treatment of patients and provide information about future prevention. It's estimated that up to 70% of clinical decisions made by doctors are based on results and information provided by medical laboratory scientists.

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

An Industry Advisory committee, made up of healthcare industry professionals, alumni, current students and recent graduates, works closely with us to develop the curriculum of this degree, ensuring you are equipped with skills and practical experience that is current and relevant to your needs.

RMIT also has regular meetings with professional bodies, such as the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS), Australasian Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine (AACB), Australian Society of Microbiology (ASM), and Australian Society of Cytology (ASC).

You will have the opportunity to undertake work integrated learning.

In your third year, you will complete one full semester of supervised professional practice (clinical placement), providing you with work-ready skills and industry experience in a diagnostic pathology laboratory. You will also have the opportunity to study a discipline-focused laboratory medicine project (capstone experience) to develop your research skills.

You will have the opportunity to travel overseas and undertake 4 to 10 weeks of additional professional practice in an approved laboratory, building your global network and boosting career opportunities.

Destination countries include the UK, the US, Ireland, Singapore, Korea and Sweden.

The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this degree and how they can be applied in your career are described in the learning outcomes.

Year 1

You will undertake subjects designed to provide a strong academic grounding in biological sciences. These will instil fundamental knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, develop your communication and professional skills and introduce you to factors that impact the health of individuals and communities. You will be introduced to the professional field of laboratory medicine via a hospital laboratory visit and basic studies in clinical disciplines.

Year 2

You will be introduced to the clinical disciplines of haematology, transfusion and transplantation science, clinical biochemistry, anatomical pathology, and medical microbiology, in preparation for your specialisations.

Year 3

You will prepare for professional practice by being introduced to professional skills in laboratory medicine and specialising in two clinical discipline streams.

In the second half of the year, you will complete a full-time supervised professional practice placement. Organised by RMIT, this is a 16-week placement that provides you with hands-on diagnostic pathology work experience.

Year 4

In your final year, you will develop skills in laboratory management, genomics medicine, integrative pathology and undertake subjects that consolidate and provide a holistic interdisciplinary learning experience in preparation for the workforce in diagnostic pathology or medical research or further postgraduate studies.

Student Learning Entitlement

On 1 January 2022, the Government implemented the Student Learning Entitlement (SLE).

  • The SLE allows students 7 years of full-time subsidised study in Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP).
  • Your total SLE amount will be reduced in accordance with your overall study load in a CSP.
  • Once you have utilised all your SLE, you can not longer study in a CSP.

For more information about SLE, visit Study Assist.

HECS-HELP Loans

The Australian Government provides financial assistance via the HECS-HELP loan scheme, which allows eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) to defer payment of up to the full amount of their student contribution.

SA-HELP Loans

You may be eligible to apply to defer payment of the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) through the SA-HELP loan scheme. If you use SA-HELP, the amount will be added to your accumulated HELP debt.

How does a HELP loan work?

If your FEE-HELP and/or SA-HELP loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT, on your behalf, up to 100% of your fees. This amount will become part of your accumulated HELP debt.

You only start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is set each year by the Australian Government (this also applies if you are still studying). The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.

For more information about loan repayment options see Commonwealth assistance (HELP loans) or Study Assist.

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2024 is $351.

For more information about calculating your actual SSAF see Paying SSAF.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.

RMIT awards more than 2000 scholarships every year to recognise academic achievement and assist students from a variety of backgrounds.

The annual tuition fee for 2024 is AU$42,240.

The total indicative tuition fee for 2024 commencement is AU$180,480.
