Details

The Bachelor of Business Professional Practice gives you access to all of the options in the (three-year) Bachelor of Business with the added benefit of a dedicated minor (in Study and Work) and professional experiences with industry partners, research centres, start-up support networks and/or the not-for-profit sector, depending on your choices.

You will start your professional experience with our award-winning industry project which involves direct industry contact and students solving industry challenges as consultants. You will then have the option to choose a range of professional experiences alongside your major/minor studies as you explore your own experiential learning journey.

The ability to determine which combination of disciplines you will study from our range of majors, minors and cross-College offerings makes this degree uniquely flexible and completely responsive to the ever-changing business landscape. The one constant that remains at the centre of a global future is you.

This degree allows you to develop yourself, to grow your professional identity and prepare a foundation of capabilities that will take you wherever your future leads. It allows you to focus on developing the personal and professional capabilities that industry seeks, such as a global mindset, a committment to social impact, digital agility, critical thinking and the ability to cut through the noise and focus on what matters.

The Bachelor of Business Professional Practice allows you to do more than respond to the future. It allows you to create your own.

Learning and teaching

This degree provides unprecedented flexibility. It starts with five foundation subjects that introduce you to the key issues currently facing industry, as well as a core introductory-level virtual internship.

Professional experience with chosen partners or sponsors continues throughout the course, giving you opportunities to design your own experiential journey, supplemented with your choice of disciplinary and cross-disciplinary study. In addition, choose any one (or two) majors, and complement this with a choice of 35 minors.

Alternatively, carve your own path by choosing not to do a major at all, and develop breadth across all of our business and cross-college offerings.

Your degree will conclude with a final year that is 100% designed by you. You could choose to work for an industry sponsor via a professional apprenticeship, start your own business with the help of RMIT Activator or undertake an applied research task with one of RMIT’s Centres for Excellence. Your path is up to you — we are here to help you navigate it.

Plenty of personal and professional development opportunities help prepare you for work, as do the many subjects that apply your learning in real-world contexts and set you up with industry-based problems to solve.

We proudly promote an active learning style, embracing the online environment and encouraging you to do more preliminary work before class. This way, you are prepared to participate in engaging discussion and debate about the subject.

Assessment methods

The assessment methods in the Bachelor of Business can depend on the subjects you select. There are no exams (unless you are doing an accredited certificate like law or accounting). Instead, assessments may include presentations, assignments and other forms of assessment. All these formats give you rich opportunities to demonstrate your understanding of the topics and challenges at hand.

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

In the Bachelor of Business Professional Practice you will engage in meaningful learning activities that integrate theoretical learning with practical application in professional contexts.

Subjects will involve interacting with organisations (industry, government and community) through discipline relevant projects and work placements.

Many subjects in the Bachelor of Business Professional Practice are closely integrated with industry and real-world problem solving as an integral part of the learning experience.

The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this degree and how they can be applied in your career are described in the learning outcomes.

The Bachelor of Business Professional Practice gives you the option to decide how you want to study, and what, to maximise your choices with total flexibility.

As a student in this degree, you will first undertake four business foundation subjects.

You will then choose to undertake one major or two, or alternatively, opt to forgo a major and focus on individual subjects and electives. You will also complete the Graduate Folio capstone subject.

From here, you will have the option to begin direct industry engagement equivalent to one year of full-time study. This can be completed as early as second year, or as late as fourth year, allowing you to undertake internships and other industry activity throughout your learning journey. One of your industry engagement subjects will be a virtual, introductory-level internship through Impact Academy, and you will have further option choices for alternative or deeper direct internship professional experience with chosen partner or sponsors.

Pathways

Understanding pathways

Undertaking a certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree can help you meet the entry requirements for your preferred course. These qualifications often provide credit, reducing the duration of your bachelor degree.

This course offers pathway options. If you don’t meet the entry requirements, a formal pathway might be your way in.

If you complete an accredited Australian Diploma, you may receive up to 2 semesters of credit (equivalent to 96 credit points).

Credit, recognition of prior learning, professional experience and accreditation from a professional body can reduce the duration of your study by acknowledging your earlier, relevant experience.

Credit and exemptions will be assessed consistent with the principles of the RMIT Credit Policy.

When you successfully complete this degree, you may be eligible for entry into an RMIT Honours or Postgraduate degree.

Successful completion of one of the following RMIT programs guarantees entry into the Bachelor of Business Professional Practice. The major you choose to study may determine the amount of credit you will be eligible to receive:

  • Associate Degree in Business - you will receive:

Student Learning Entitlement

On 1 January 2022, the Government implemented the Student Learning Entitlement (SLE).

  • The SLE allows students 7 years of full-time subsidised study in Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP).
  • Your total SLE amount will be reduced in accordance with your overall study load in a CSP.
  • Once you have utilised all your SLE, you can not longer study in a CSP.

For more information about SLE, visit Study Assist.

HECS-HELP Loans

The Australian Government provides financial assistance via the HECS-HELP loan scheme, which allows eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) to defer payment of up to the full amount of their student contribution.

SA-HELP Loans

You may be eligible to apply to defer payment of the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) through the SA-HELP loan scheme. If you use SA-HELP, the amount will be added to your accumulated HELP debt.

How does a HELP loan work?

If your FEE-HELP and/or SA-HELP loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT, on your behalf, up to 100% of your fees. This amount will become part of your accumulated HELP debt.

You only start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is set each year by the Australian Government (this also applies if you are still studying). The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.

For more information about loan repayment options see Commonwealth assistance (HELP loans) or Study Assist.

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2024 is $351.

For more information about calculating your actual SSAF see Paying SSAF.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.

RMIT awards more than 2000 scholarships every year to recognise academic achievement and assist students from a variety of backgrounds.
