Our academics are active researchers who hold PhD qualifications and bring first-hand experience from performance, international touring, event coordination and the music business. We also invite guest lecturers and sessional tutors from cultural organisations, arts bodies and other relevant organisations so you experience the breadth of the music industries.
Your learning combines multiple approaches. Lectures and tutorials engage you with theories, histories and research. Research projects develop your analytical and writing skills. Industry-partnered projects provide insight into professional music work, while workshops and problem-solving activities let you apply what you've learned to real situations. Specialised classes in Ableton Live production and DJing offer hands-on experience creating and producing music.
The Music Industry Capstone in your final year brings together everything you've developed. You'll produce a polished project in your chosen area – creative, business-focused or research-based – and present it publicly. Reflection on your experiences and feedback from industry practitioners help you build your professional identity. An 80-hour work placement at a music industry organisation completes the capstone, giving you direct experience learning from professionals in a real workplace.
Lecturers, technicians, and industry professionals contribute quality content relating to contemporary and historical art practices, theories, cultures and contexts that you can access via the online RMIT Art School platform.
